Today, we bear a profound sense of grief at Georgia Southwestern State University as we mourn the loss of President Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States and a highly esteemed alumnus of our institution. The former leader of the free world, President Carter’s post-presidential contributions stand out in history. His humanitarian efforts, from eradicating diseases in developing countries to building affordable housing across the globe to donating his Nobel Peace Prize winnings to support caregivers, made the world a better place.
President Carter’s unwavering support for Georgia Southwestern through the years has been an invaluable pillar for our institution. We take great pride in upholding his legacy on campus through the President Jimmy Carter Leadership Program, his 1942 signature etching in the Presidential Plaza, the James Earl Carter Library named in honor of his father, and the Willow Oak planted as a tribute to both him and Rosalynn.
As a man dedicated to a life of service, the impact President Carter left on this world will be felt for generations to come. May his memory serve as a blessing to us all, inspiring acts of kindness and leadership driven by a heart devoted to service.
