AMERICUS (May 10, 2023) — Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) will hold its Spring 2023 Commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 12 in the Convocation Hall of the Student Success Center, also known as the Storm Dome. Graduates from the College of Education and College of Nursing and Health Sciences will be recognized in the 10 a.m. ceremony, while graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Business and Computing will be recognized in the 2 p.m. ceremony. Over 260 students are graduating with approximately 230 graduates walking.
The commencement speaker will be Scott Steiner, president and chief executive officer of Phoebe Putney Health System – a comprehensive, regional health system with more than 4,500 employees based in Albany, Ga. Steiner has a Master of Business Administration and over 30 years of experience in healthcare administration. Before leading Phoebe, he worked as an executive with Tenet Healthcare Corporation for 12 years, most recently as CEO of four Tenet hospitals in Detroit.
In 2021, Scott was named as one of the 100 Most Influential Georgians by Georgia Trend Magazine and has quickly become one of Georgia’s strongest advocates for healthcare workforce development, alerting state leaders about the employment crisis hospitals are facing. He made it a priority to strengthen Phoebe’s partnerships with colleges and secondary schools throughout the region and has overseen the development of innovative new collaborations that have expanded nursing programs in multiple area colleges, resulting in an expanding pipeline of future healthcare professionals for Phoebe and other health systems in the region.
Doors to the inside of the Convocation Hall will close five minutes before each ceremony, so guests should arrive early and plan accordingly for parking and finding seats. Accessible parking and seating will be available.
The ceremonies will be live-streamed on GSW’s YouTube channel for those unable to make it at www.youtube.com/GeorgiaSouthwestern.
