Statewide shelter in place issued by Ga. Governor

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp issued a new Executive Order which takes effect at 6:00pm on Friday, April 3, 2020 lasting until April 13, 2020 regarding COVID-19 and the Public Health Emergency. This Order includes the implementation of a statewide shelter in place directive with the exception of Critical Infrastructure.

The University System of Georgia (USG) and constituent entities, such as Georgia Southwestern, are considered Critical Infrastructure to the extent of which they are “educators supporting public and private K-12 schools, colleges, and universities for purposes of facilitating distance learning or performing other essential functions…”

The Order further allows for Necessary Travel to “conduct” (i.e. faculty or staff) or “participate in” (i.e. students) Critical Infrastructure (i.e. “facilitating distance learning or performing other essential functions”). Thus, Georgia Southwestern can continue distance learning and performing other essential functions, and GSW faculty, staff and students can conduct Necessary Travel for these purposes.

So what does this mean for GSW faculty, staff and students?

Faculty and Staff:

  • GSW will continue operations as have been conducted over the past few weeks.
    • Efforts remain on maintaining safe distances, and bringing only minimal staff physically on-site to ensure continuity of certain services.
  • Obtain a Travel Verification letter from your immediate supervisor to keep on you during your travel to and from work as well as your GSW ID.

Students:

  • Move-Out is still taking place for residential students.
    • Please use the Travel Verification letter that will be sent in your confirmation email the day before your scheduled move-out.
    • Contact Residence Life at housing@gsw.edu with questions.
  • Travel to GSW’s campus to use open computer labs and local libraries or other places with access to public WiFi is allowed.

Please continue to check www.gsw.edu/coronavirus as new resources and campus updates are added regularly.
