HESI A2 Exam

The HESI (Health Education Systems, Inc.) Admission Assessment (A2) is a computerized exam designed to assess prospective students entering the health science fields. The HESI A2 consists of eight different exams, seven of which are required by the Nursing program at Georgia Southwestern State University. The Georgia Southwestern State University pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing program requires the HESI A2 for all nursing applicants Entrance decisions will be based on a HESI A2 composite score of 75%. Students seeking pre-licensure Associate of Science in Nursing program must receive a composite score of 65%. Admission is competitive. Students must have a minimum HESI A2 composite score to apply for admission to the School of Nursing. Georgia Southwestern State University School of Nursing requires students to take the following seven components of the HESI A2:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

  • Reading Comprehension
    Provides reading scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, making logical inferences, etc.
  • Vocabulary and General Knowledge
    Contains vocabulary terms that are commonly used in both general English-speaking settings and in health care fields.
  • Grammar
    Contains basic grammar, including parts of speech, important terms and their uses, commonly occurring grammatical errors, etc.

MATH

  • Basic Math Skills
    Focuses on math skills needed for health care fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures, general math facts, etc.

SCIENCE

  • Biology
    Covers biology basics, water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, etc.
  • Chemistry
    Contains test items that cover matter, chemical equations and reactions, the periodic table, atomic structure, nuclear chemistry, chemical bonding, etc.
  • Anatomy and Physiology
    Provides coverage of general terminology and anatomical structures and systems.

It is strongly recommended that students wait until they have successfully completed all required English, Mathematics and Science courses (Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology) before attempting the exam. Students will be able to view immediate results after the exam.

Students having any kind of issues with registering should contact the Testing Center PRIOR to attempting to registering again. This will ensure that there are no duplicate registrations.

Preparing for HESI Exam

Non-Student Registration

Non-students and new users (without CanesNet credentials) must create a Dynamic Forms account to proceed. Upon completion, please verify your account with the link provided in your email from NG WebSolutions. Students who have left GSW or graduated a year ago or longer must create a new account. Current students can proceed to the next step.

Create Evolve Account

Create an Evolve account by visiting www.evolve.elsevier.com.

  • Click on I’m a Student, then click My Evolve.
  • In the orange pop-up box, click Create Account.
  • You will receive an email containing your username and password.

Choose Test Date & Register

Select an available testing date, and register for the HESI exam through GSW's Testing Center. Be prepared to complete the payment process. If you have any issues please, contact the Testing Center before attempting to register another time. Please use your Canes Net credentials if you are prompted to log in.

Prepare for Exam

Bring your username and password received from Evolve along with two picture ID's to the testing center on the day of your exam. Study material can be found by searching "Admission Assessment Exam Review" on www.evolve.elsevier.com.

Important Testing Information

Each student is allowed to take the HESI A2 test two times within 2 years to be accepted into the Nursing Program at Georgia Southwestern State University. Also, a student must score 75% or above to be admitted into the BSN program and a score of 65% or above to be admitted into the ASN program on the GSW campus.

Please see the following guidelines for testing:

  • Calculators are not permitted unless approved as part of a documented disability accommodation.
    Scratch paper will be provided by the testing center.
  • Students with a documented disability must contact GSW Office of Disability Services six weeks in advance if needing accommodations to test.
  • The actual test time is 4 hours and 45 minutes, and there are no scheduled breaks. Students must be at Testing Center at 8:30 on test day to prepare appropriately.
  • If you are a no show or cancel for any reason on your scheduled test date, even if you have registered in error, you will not be refunded your registration fee per the HESI A2 policy.
  • The GSW Testing Center does not offer remote testing or provide eligibility/department ID codes for the HESI A2 exam at other testing centers. If you choose to take the exam at a different location, please request the specific subjects listed above that are required for admission into GSW's nursing programs.

Retesting Procedure

Students will be allowed to retest once, with a minimum of 30 days between tests. Students will be allowed to test 2 times within 2 years. Scores are good for two (2) years.

Registering for the Exam

Registration requires selecting the testing date and payment. Upon submission, you should receive two confirmation emails, one for submission AND one for payment. Confirmation emails can take a few minutes to receive. DO NOT register multiple times for the same date without confirming registration with the Testing Center.

Please make sure to allow time for payment processing before closing your window to prevent any processing issues.
