Requests for new network connections should be sent by email to email@example.com and they will be routed to Network Services.
To report a problem relating to network connectivity (the cable is broken, the wall jack is broken) call the helpdesk (2074).
In the event you are considering purchasing a device to be attached to the network, please involve OIIT network support staff in your decision process in an advisory capacity so that the best choices may be made and so that the opportunity to evaluate in a timely manner the resources needed to support the device may be obtained. The same applies to connecting an existing device to the network as any device attached to the network affects all others.
Any plans for renovation of buildings, offices, classrooms, computer labs, etc., which use network connections should be shared with network support staff at the earlier stages of planning.
Georgia Southwestern State University has three wireless networks to the campus:
"Open" wireless internet connectivity is available in the following areas and can be accessed without a username or password:
- James Earl Carter Library
- Marshal Student Center (coffee shop lounge)
- Student Success Center (Chik-fil-a)
Connecting to GSW Wireless
GSW Wireless is an "open" wireless network and is only available in the James Earl Carter Library and in the Marshall Student Center. GSW Wireless will show up on your computer or mobile device with the SSID "GSW_Wireless". Upon connecting your computer or portable device to the GSW_Wireless network, you must open a browser and accept the Network Usage Policy by clicking the "I Agree to the Policy Above" button.
Access to the GSW_Guest wireless network is available short-term for individuals or groups with legitimate business or academic needs and are sponsored by a University department. To request access to this network, contact the IIT helpdesk at least two business days prior to the scheduled event.
This network is available anywhere that the "CanesNet" network is available.
The following areas have wireless internet connectivity on the CanesNet wireless network and require a username and password:

Connecting to CanesNet
CanesNet will show up on your computer or mobile device with the SSID "CanesNet". After connecting to this wireless network and opening a browser, you will be prompted to log in and register your device. You will need to use your CanesNet credentials to log in. If you have any problems or questions, contact the IIT department at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 931-2074.
Each individual is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of his/her CanesNet login and password. Login credentials should not under any circumstances be shared. To do so is a violation of the GSW Computer and Network Usage Policy.

- What hardware do I need to get connected to the internet?
If you are in a wired dorm, you will need a wired network card (most new computers come with one installed), and an Ethernet cable.
If you are in a wireless dorm, you will need a wireless network adapter. Most laptops have one of these built-in.
- Where is wireless available on campus?
Wireless internet is available in several areas around campus.
- Anything else I should know?
Yes! Students must realize that once connected to the network they will have a full time internet connection. In order to protect against outside threats, students are encouraged to have antivirus software, and have Automatic Updates enabled within their operating system.
