Who can use GSW’s ILL service?
Interlibrary Loan services are available to all currently registered Georgia Southwestern State University students, GSW faculty, and staff members.
GSW's ILL service is not available to:
Community patrons or visitors. If you are a member of any of these groups, we recommend that you use your public library's ILL services.
What can be borrowed?
Books, DVDs, music CDs, copies of articles and government documents are generally available for borrowing.
What cannot be borrowed?
Materials already available in the GSW library and books already available through GIL Express. Remember, check the GSW online catalogue and GIL Express before using ILLiad. Reference books, textbooks, rare or historical items, entire issues of journals, current "bestsellers," and genealogical materials are generally not available for ILL borrowing. Current textbooks being used for classes are not available.
For how long may I borrow an item?
Books, etc.: The borrowing period is determined by the lending library, so this time period varies. When an item arrives from a lending library, the due date is assigned, and you will be able to clearly see this date when you pick up the material. Some lending libraries will allow renewals for additional lending time. You may request a renewal through the ILLiad online system. You will be notified via email as to the status of your renewal request. You may also contact the ILL Department at 1-229-931-2133 before the book is due to see if a renewal is possible.
Articles: You will receive electronic (pdf) versions of your article requests. You will be notified via email that your article is available and will be given further instructions informing you how to obtain the article.
How many items can I borrow?
You may have 10 active requests at any one time. Once you have returned one or more of your items, you can keep requesting items until you reach the maximum 10 items again.
Is there a lending fee?
Lending fees are rare, but possible. They are determined by the lending library. If there is the potential for a fee, we will contact you via email to ask if you are willing to pay the fee. If you do not respond to this email, we will not process your request.
I need to place a request and I was told to create an ILLiad account. What is ILLiad?
ILLiad is the online interlibrary loan service used here at GSW. The system will allow you to quickly and easily place requests for items from other libraries and then track the status of your request. How long does it take?
An average of 1-2 weeks for book loans and less than a week for article copies.
How will I be notified that my item has arrived?
We will contact you via email when your item is ready for pickup. If we are unable to obtain the requested item, we will notify you via email as soon as possible.
Returning Items & Borrower Responsibilities:
Please return books obtained via ILL on or before the date due. Because this is a special loan from another library, it is important to return books promptly so that we can maintain good relationships with lending libraries. Books borrowed through ILL are the property of the lending library, not the GSW library. Borrowers are responsible for any ILL items that are lost or damaged, and must pay any and all late fees or replacement & processing costs, as determined by the lending library.
All Interlibrary Loan requests will be subject to the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) which governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.
