International Student Services

International students at Georgia Southwestern have access to all regular Campus Services. In addition to these items, international students should remain up-to-date on all travel policies and transportation services available.

GSW Shuttle Service

GSW’s Office of Student Engagement provides students with free transportation to different locations in Americus. The Shuttle picks up GSW Students outside of the Storm Dome parking lot near Chick-fil-a approximately every hour on the hour. In the event of overflow, the driver will come back and make a second run.

The shuttle visits different common locations in Americus such as grocery stores and banks. It meets in central locations on campus, usually in the Storm Dome parking lot. For students needing special requests such as an uncommon location or transportation to Albany for immigration services, please contact the Office of Student Engagement via email at student.engagement@gsw.edu.

Shuttle Hours:

  • Monday: 11 a.m.  - 4 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 12 p.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Friday: 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Traveling as an International Student

Traveling Within the US

When traveling within the U.S. you may be asked by a law enforcement officer to show your immigration documents. Be sure you always have your documents or a copy of them with you; keep them in a safe place so as not to misplace them.

Traveling Outside of the US

Students traveling outside of the U.S. should prepare diligently and be aware of any current travel restrictions.

The following documents are needed for re-entry to the U.S.

  • A valid Form I-20 or DS-2019, endorsed for travel and signed by your DSO
  • A valid, non-expired F-1 visa
  • A valid, non-expired passport valid for at least six months after the date of your reentry or, if you are from one of the countries listed below, a passport that is current through the date of entry
  • Recent financial documents providing continued financial ability

If you are from a visa exempt country, you do not need a visa to reenter the United States from the western hemisphere, but make sure that you present your I-20 to be admitted as an F-1 student and not a visitor.

Important Reminders while Traveling

Things to remember when you travel:

  • If you are traveling outside the U.S. please check your SEVIS form I-20/DS-2019 for a valid travel signature by a Designated School Official.
  • If the signature will be valid on the date that you will re-enter the U.S. you may use it for travel.
  • If the signature will be expired on the date that you return to the U.S. bring your SEVIS form I-20/DS-2019 to a DSO for a new travel signature.
  • If you plan to travel to a country other than your own, you should contact the Consulate of that country to find out if you need a visa. You can access information through the Department of State website.

Automatic Visa Revalidation

Allows most F-1 students to travel to the countries contiguous to the U.S. for less than 30 days prior to the date of expiration on their current visa; provided the traveler has proper documentation. This process will revalidate your visa but will not renew you expiring or expired visa. See Visa Renewal Process for renewal steps.

Applying for a Social Security Number

You must have a job offer before you are eligible to apply for a Social Security Number and be able to provide an offer letter or proof of employment.

If you are a F-1 student employed on-campus, you are required to obtain a social security card after employment.

As of March 17, 2021, the Social Security Office is closed until further notice due to COVID-19. To complete the application, you are required to call to schedule an appointment - walk-ins are not accepted.

F-1 visa holders are required to submit the following documents to apply for a Social Security Card:

  • An Employer Verification Letter stating that you have received an offer of employment.
  • An authorization letter from GSW’s DSO
  • Valid Passport
  • I-20 or DS-2019
  • I-94 - You may apply for or retrieve an I-94 here.
  • Check-stub from OneUSG (only if you have completed a pay cycle)
