Student Loans

Do you need to accept your student loans?

  • If the answer is no - Do nothing, your loans will remain available if your financial situation changes, but they will not be disbursed, otherwise.
  • If the answer is yes - Follow the instructions below to accept your loans.

Accepting Your Student Loans

If you are accepting your loan for the first time or you have been out of school for some time, you must accept the loan in two phases.

  • Phase 1 - Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note (MPN):

    1. Go to studentaid.gov
    2. Sign in using your FSA ID (ID used for FAFSA).
    3. Complete the required Entrance Counseling.
    4. Complete the Master Promissory Note (MPN).

    Please note that this process may take up to 10 days to be reported to GSW after it is completed.

  • Phase 2 - Accept Your Loan with Georgia Southwestern:

    1. Log into your RAIN account.
    2. Click on Financial Aid.
    3. Click on Award.
    4. Click on Award By Aid Year.
    5. Select the correct Aid Year.
    6. Click on Accept Full Amount All Awards at the bottom of the page to accept the full amount OR click Accept and Enter the Amount you would like to take out beside each of your loans, if you want to accept less than the full amount.
    7. Click Submit Decision.
    8. If you have not already done so, accept your Terms and Conditions.
      • Go back to Aid Year.
      • Click on Terms and Conditions.
    Read and click Accept Terms and Conditions.

  1. Log into your RAIN account.
  2. Click on Student Services.
  3. Click on Registration.
  4. Click on Registration Fee Assessment.
  5. Select the correct Term and click Submit.
Scroll down to see invoice total including current financial aid awards.

Parent Plus Application Information

Students needing additional funds should consider asking their parents to apply for a Parent Plus Loan.

  • Parents should sign in with their FSA ID and password
  • Click on Apply for a Direct PLUS Loan
  • Click on Start new to Direct PLUS Loan Application for Parents

General Loan Information

You do not have to accept the loan offer, or you may accept a portion of the loan offered. To accept a partial loan amount, type the amount you wish to borrow that is less that the offer. This amount will be split between two semesters. 

Types of Loans

  • Subsidized Loan - Interest is paid by the federal government while you are in school and will begin accruing once you leave school. This is the preferred loan choice.
  • Unsubsidized Loan - Interest will accrue while you are in school and you will have to repay accrued interest plus the loan amount.
