Why did you choose to attend GSW?
My husband, two daughters, and I have lived in Americus since 2010, and I’ve always thought Georgia Southwestern was a beautiful campus. It’s such an asset to our community. I feel fortunate to be able to attend such an excellent college right here where I live.

Please list your University highlights, achievements, leadership and awards.

  • Notetaker for the Office of Accommodations and Access
  • Americus Junior Service League, sustaining member

Why did you choose your major, or what do you love about your major program at GSW?
My passion is psychology. I absolutely love learning how the mind works and what motivates our thoughts and behaviors. The psychology department is comprised of professors who care about their students' success. They are exceedingly kind and sincerely helpful. They are extremely accessible and willing to go the extra mile to help.

What makes GSW special?
GSW has a unique culture. The faculty embrace the culture and that spills over into the student body. There is a sense of pride among all associated with the college that is contagious. GSW is community oriented and it’s fun to see the college represented throughout the Americus and Sumter County community.

What’s your favorite spot on campus and why?
The Storm Dome is a really cool place. Both of my girls have played basketball there many times during middle and high school, so I’ve spent lots of time there. Sumter County is fortunate to have this facility. GSW is always gracious to host community events there.

Who is your favorite professor or staff member and why?
I like all of my professors for various reasons, but especially because they’re so helpful. Dr. Gary Fisk, Dr. Ellen Cotter, Dr. Judy Grissett and Dr. Sally Merritt are all truly wonderful!

What have you learned (or are learning) that has made the biggest difference for you?
I’ve learned that it is never too late to go back to college. There is an initial adjustment period, but once I got used to being back in school and developing study habits it has been quite fun.

What has been your greatest challenge?
Going back to school as an adult with two children in school as well. I began pursuing this degree at 48 after being out of school for 26 years. My mother was placed in hospice care the week before I began school last spring. I was very involved with her care and thought I was going to have to give up going back to school. My professors were incredibly supportive during this difficult time.

What is your plan after graduation?
I plan to pursue a master's in counseling.

What is your favorite place to eat, shop, or hang out in Americus?
Downtown Americus is a really unique place. The historic Windsor is such a draw for people who might not normally venture off the beaten path. I would have a tough time narrowing down a favorite when it comes to downtown because there are many charming places to dine, shop and hangout.

What is your favorite series to binge watch? Why?
Bloodline. It’s one of the most intriguing series I’ve ever watched. So much so that I’ve watched it twice. My husband and I love the Keys. That’s one reason we are so drawn to Bloodline.
