Participation:

  1. All currently enrolled students, faculty and staff are eligible to participate. A student becomes ineligible immediately upon withdrawing from GSW; faculty and staff also become ineligible upon termination from the university. Participants in all intramurals sports and fitness center patrons are required to scan a validated GSW ID before being allowed to participate in each event.
  2. A player shall not be permitted to play with more than one team per sport. Players may play on a men’s/women’s as well as a co-rec. team in the same sport. A player is a member of the first team that he/she signs a game scoresheet with.
  3. Roster additions must be made in the Campus Recreation office by 2:00 p.m. on game day, prior to participation of new player(s). Use of non-rostered player results in the use of an ineligible player. A player of a team that forfeits out without having played a game may join another team. Any team that allows an ineligible player to participate shall forfeit the game(s) in which the ineligible player participated.
  4. Professional athletes are ineligible to participate in a related sport for a period of 2 years.
  5. Students whose names appear on an official intercollegiate athletic squad shall be ineligible to compete in that sport or any related sports.
  6. Playoff eligibility will be determined by the names on the roster; all players must play in at least 1 regular season games to be eligible for the playoffs.
  7. Shirts must be worn in all contests. Sunglasses, hats, and jewelry will not be permitted in all team sports. Tobacco and alcohol will not be permitted at any activity. Playing or spectating under the influence of alcohol is cause for immediate ejection.

Intramural Sports: Forfeits, Defaults & Postponements:

  1. A team not fielding the minimum number of players at game time shall receive a forfeit loss. If both teams fail to field the minimum number of players at game time, both will receive a forfeit.
  2. Any team receiving 2 forfeits shall be eliminated from the league and will lose their deposit. All results and standings up to that point will be official.
  3. The Department of Recreational Sports reserves the right to postpone activities due to inclement weather or facility conflicts.
  4. Team scheduling requests will not be allowed after the captains meeting. Any and all scheduling request will be reviewed by the Director of Campus Recreation, who will have the final authority on said requests. Requests will not be honored in the playoffs and may be denied during regular season league play.
  5. Teams may request to default one contest during the season, provided the request is done, in person, by 2:00 p.m. on the day of the contest in the Campus Recreation office. The team will still receive a loss, but not a forfeit loss.

Protests:

If a disagreement should arise between a player and an official concerning the interpretation of a playing rule or rules that could have or has had a direct bearing on the outcome of the contest, a protest may be made by the team captain to the officials. Protests must be made at the time of the dispute and before play is resumed (if play begins after a potential protestable situation, there will be no protest. To protest, the game shall be stopped and the captain shall request the head official/supervisor. The head official/supervisor will give the captain a protest form, which must be completed and submitted to the Campus Recreation office by 12:00 noon the following day along with a $10 protest fee. This $10 fee will be returned if the protest is upheld, and the game will be replayed from the point of the protest. Misapplication of playing rules and participant eligibility are the only elements of the contest, which may be protested. OFFICIAL’S JUDGEMENT MAY NOT BE PROTESTED! In case of a disagreement between players in matches without officials, a re-match will be scheduled and an official will be assigned if needed. Protests will be considered and decided upon by the Director of Recreational Sports, unless the Director was involved in the protestable situation either as a player or an official. If the Director was involved in the protestable situation, then an Intramural advisory council will determine the validity of the protest.

Intramural Sports Playoffs:

  1. Playoff tournaments will be single elimination unless otherwise specified; teams will be seeded by regular season records.
  2. With 3 or more leagues, teams will be selected based on regular season records. The top 2 teams from each division will automatically advance. In the event of a tie for 1st or 2nd place, the playoff berths will go to the top 2 teams based on the following:

    1st: best record (best winning % if unequal # of games)
    2nd: head to head (If 2 teams are tied, played twice and split, the team scoring the highest margin of victory in head to head games will advance. If the margins of victory are the equal, continue through the tiebreaker procedure. If 3 teams are tied, and one team beat the other 2, that team will advance and head to head will apply to the other 2 teams. If one team did not beat the other two or if 4 or more are tied, move on to the 3rd tiebreaker.
    3rd: Point Differential for all games.

    Wild cards selections may also be given in a particular sport based on the following:
    1st: best record
    2nd: head to head (refer to above for tiebreaker procedure)
    3rd: average point differential

  3. In some sports, all teams that haven’t forfeited out will advance to the playoffs.
  4. The number of teams advancing to the playoffs is subject to change from sport to sport depending on the number or teams or participants entered.

Intramural Sports: Greek Teams:

Only active members, on the current roster for that specific semester are allowed to represent a fraternity/sorority on the Greek team. If there is a Greek team, only 1 team from each organization may participate in the league, all other teams must play in the independent leagues. Players may not participate on more than 1 team.

Intramural Sports: Player Conduct Policies:

***Note: The Director reserves the right to assign additional penalties then what is stated below. More severe cases may involve referral to the University Non-Academic Judicial Officer.

  1. Any ejection carries an automatic 1 game suspension from the incident specific sport:
    Note 1: Any player ejected shall leave the site within 1 minute (sight & sound of the ejecting official) or the game shall be forfeited.
    Note 2: Any player suspended must meet with the Director to be reinstated
    Note 3: Any player suspended may not participate in another sport/event until his/her suspension has been served.
  2. Player plays under an assumed name:
    • A. Ejected if caught during the contest; suspended for remainder of intramural year
    • B. 2nd offense: permanent suspension for all GSW recreational sports activities
  3. Player uses abusive language towards an official, supervisor, IM staff, or opponent:
    • A. Can be ejected immediately by supervisor or official
    • B. 2nd offense: suspended from all campus recreation activities for 1 calendar year
    • C. 3rd offense: permanent suspension
  4. Player uses unnecessary roughness:
    • A. Can be ejected immediately by official, supervisor
    • B. 2nd offense: suspended from the remainder of sport specific season
    • C. 3rd offense: suspended from all recreation activities for 1 calendar year
    • D. 4th offense: permanent suspension
  5. Player attempts to or does hit, swing at, threaten, push, or grab an official, supervisor, player, and/or spectator:
    • A. Immediate ejection by official or supervisor
    • B. Suspended from all Intramural activities indefinitely; the Director will determine if and when the suspension will be lifted; student(s) may be reported to the University Non-Academic Judicial Officer.
  6. Team uses ineligible player(s):
    • A. 1st offense: team receives a forfeit for each contest the ineligible player(s) participated in. If 2 or more games, the team will be dropped from the league
    • B. 2nd offense: team members will be suspended from recreation activities for 1 full semester
  7. Team fighting (2 or more players from 1 team):
    • A. Game is immediately terminated, losses will be given to the inciting team and possibly both after consultation with game officials, supervisor, and the Director (See Player Conduct #5)
    • B. 2nd time reported results in team suspension for one calendar year.
  8. Any behavior or actions determined by the Campus Recreation staff to be extremely inappropriate or unacceptable
    • A. Immediate ejection by official or supervisor
    • B. Suspended from all Intramural activities indefinitely; the Director will determine if and when the suspension will be lifted; student(s) may be reported to the University Non- Academic Judicial Officer.
