The Professor of the Year Award is given to a member of the faculty who exhibits dedication and commitment to the students and their success at Georgia Southwestern. The recipient of this annual award is nominated by the graduates of the preceding year and is presented by the Alumni Association along with a $1000 stipend. The GSW Alumni Association has sponsored this award since its founding in 1980.

(One Faculty Award and One Staff Award)

The awards for Faculty and Staff Excellence in Advising recognize faculty and staff of Georgia Southwestern State University that have demonstrated the qualities associated with outstanding student advising at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. A staff nominee must be involved in the direct delivery of advising services as part of his/her job responsibilities to Georgia Southwestern.

Successful recipients will demonstrate advising qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding advisor.  

Such evidence may include, but is not necessarily limited to, the following: 

  • A caring attitude toward students
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Monitoring of student progress toward academic and life goals
  • Mastery of institutional regulations, policies and procedures
  • Ability to engage in developmental advising (career and life planning)
  • Behavior designed to build a strong relationship with students
  • Availability and frequent contact to students
  • Seeking out students in informal settings
  • Use of appropriate referrals
  • Attendance and support of advisors’ developmental programs
  • Perception by colleagues of nominee’s advising skills
  • Enhancing programs for the direct benefit of students

Nominations for staff may include all areas where advising is critical, such as financial aid, counseling, and other support areas. Nominations will be reviewed by the Advising Subcommittee of the Committee on Academic Affairs.

This is an award given by the Student Government Association to recognize an outstanding faculty member. The Student Government Association is heavily involved on campus and cannot accomplish what they do without the support of the faculty. This award is presented to a faculty member who consistently promotes student engagement, school spirit, and serves as an exceptional mentor to all students. The award is nominated and voted on by members of the Student Government Association and presented to the faculty member for their contribution above and beyond the call of duty.

This is an award given by the Student Government Association to recognize an outstanding Staff member. The award is named after the late Chief Oris Bryant, who served as an exception advisor the Student Government Association for a number of years as well as a friend and mentor to all students on campus. This award is presented to a staff member who consistently promotes student engagement, school spirit, and serves as an exceptional mentor to all students. The award is nominated and voted on by members of the Student Government Association and presented to the staff member for their contribution above and beyond the call of duty, an example set by Chief Oris Bryant.
