Sponsored by the GSW Alumni Association, this award is selected by the fall and spring graduates each year.

The Alumni Association is offers a $1000 stipend to the recipient of this award. 

(One Faculty Award and One Staff Award)

The awards for Faculty and Staff Excellence in Advising recognize faculty and staff of Georgia Southwestern State University that have demonstrated the qualities associated with outstanding student advising at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. A staff nominee must be involved in the direct delivery of advising services as part of his/her job responsibilities to Georgia Southwestern.

Successful recipients will demonstrate advising qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding advisor.  

Such evidence may include, but is not necessarily limited to, the following: 

  • A caring attitude toward students
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Monitoring of student progress toward academic and life goals
  • Mastery of institutional regulations, policies and procedures
  • Ability to engage in developmental advising (career and life planning)
  • Behavior designed to build a strong relationship with students
  • Availability and frequent contact to students
  • Seeking out students in informal settings
  • Use of appropriate referrals
  • Attendance and support of advisors’ developmental programs
  • Perception by colleagues of nominee’s advising skills
  • Enhancing programs for the direct benefit of students

Nominations for staff may include all areas where advising is critical, such as financial aid, counseling, and other support areas. Nominations will be reviewed by the Advising Subcommittee of the Committee on Academic Affairs.

The awards for Faculty and Staff Excellence in University Service recognizes faculty and staff for their contributions to the essential work of Georgia Southwestern State University at the highest level.

Successful recipients will demonstrate meritorious service that is above and beyond the duties normally assigned to their positions and demonstrate dedicated service in their care for others. At the time of nomination, individuals must have at least one year of service at Georgia Southwestern State University.

Service activities may extend beyond campus and may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Volunteer work
  • Leadership roles or membership on the board of a nonprofit organization
  • Innovative service learning programming
  • Service club leadership and activities
  • Community engagement activities

Nominations for faculty will be reviewed by the Faculty Affairs Committee. Nominations for staff will be reviewed by the Staff Senate.

Nominations for Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards

Nominations for all Excellence Awards are sought prior to April 1 of each year. An individual can receive no more than one award from the designated category every three years. Final nominations for faculty excellence awards in each category should be provided by the academic dean of the college or school and should consist of a CV and letter(s) of support describing the faculty member’s contributions.

The dean of each college/school may nominate one faculty member for each category faculty category (Teaching, Scholarship, Service and Advising).  Nominations for staff excellence awards may be provided by the employee’s supervisor and should consist of a letter(s) of support describing the staff member’s contributions. A supervisor may submit one employee for each staff category (Service and Advising).

All completed nominations will be submitted to the respective review committees for final review and consideration.

(One Award)

The award for Faculty Excellence in Scholarship is provided to a member of the Georgia Southwestern State University faculty that exhibits an established or increasing record of outstanding research, scholarship and/or creative contributions in their field. 

At the time of nomination, individuals must have at least two years of service at Georgia Southwestern. 

The award will recognize the following:

  • Quality and contributions of faculty research
  • Scholarship
  • Creative activity undertaken while a faculty member at Georgia Southwestern across the broad spectrum of disciplines

Nominations will be reviewed by the Faculty Affairs Committee.
