The annual GSW Undergraduate Humanities Symposium is an annual fall-term event that supports student and faculty conversations across the arts, emphasizing original student research and creative exploration. Students are encouraged to participate across their time at GSW, from the first-year experience to senior year expressions. This one-day event hosted in early November features a wide variety of poster or individual research presentations as well as group-oriented discussion forums and roundtables. While students from GSW make up the majority of participants, the Humanities Symposium also invites participation from undergraduates across the state of Georgia.
To participate, students must complete and submit the Abstract Submission Form using their CanesNet Credentials. This submission must be completed online by mid-October. Stay tuned to this page for specific updates relating to the scheduling of this event.

Yes, as long as the project you present this year is sufficiently different from the one you did last year. It is up to you to explain the differences to the organizing committee evaluating the abstracts.
This event is intended to feature undergraduate research but if you are a new graduate and want to share in the discussions of the symposium, you are invited to contact Humanities Symposium organizers to discuss opportunities for mentorship or engagement.
Yes, as long as the two projects are distinctly different. However, keep in mind that the logistics of when you give those presentations may affect this. For example, you cannot present two posters in the same symposium because there is only one poster session and you cannot stand at two different posters at the same time.
Faculty mentors are not required but students are encouraged to work with their instructors to prepare for this event.
Talk to your faculty advisors or to the organizers of the Humanities Symposium. Some academic fields involving human subjects MUST receive approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) before the project begins. But other academic fields such as History or Political Science do not have this same requirement. For more information about IRB approval and how to obtain it, please see the Georgia Southwestern IRB webpage.

Because the Humanities Symposium encourages students to share early draft and exploratory work, sustained discussion involving all members of the campus community is particularly rewarding. We thank all of our faculty, staff, and community supporters who have joined with student participants to discuss creative ideas, research methodologies, and analytical perspectives. These conversations help students expand upon their individual projects and build important intellectual networks across SWGA.
My favorite professor is Dr. Ryer in the English department. She was one of the first professors I took on my English journey and made such an impact on me by getting me out of my comfort zone and getting me to present a paper in the Humanities Symposium on campus, which I ended up loving.
