Chemistry, Geology, & Physics

Ignite your interest in the sciences with hands-on experiments that allow you to understand worldly concepts in the palm of your hand. The Department of Chemistry, Geology, and Physics provides students with the foundation to thoroughly understand composition, processes, and physical laws that define the universe. Students will be offered hands-on practice with a variety of instrumentation used in the areas of chemistry, earth, and physical sciences along with lab experiments, field studies, analytical techniques, and research projects to enhance knowledge an understanding.

Our intimate classroom setting allows for an in-depth 1-on-1 mentorship throughout courses and research projects. Students are provided personal guidance throughout the program for classes and experience that best suit their personal interests and career goals. Advising includes information to prepare students for potential careers, graduate studies, resume creation, and job placement.

The Department of Chemistry, Geology, and Physics at Georgia Southwestern State University is dedicated to providing the finest possible educational experiences for students of Georgia Southwestern in the areas of Earth and Physical Sciences with the goal of instilling a fascination with and dedication to lifelong learning about the world around them by providing a thorough background in the composition, processes, and physical laws that define the Universe.

Our programs Integrate coursework training with up-to-date analytical techniques, field experiences and research projects throughout our programs to provide our majors with the experiential background needed for successful graduate education and careers in the natural and physical sciences.

The Agerton Observatory is operated by GSW's Department of Chemistry, Geology & Physics and is located atop the Roney Building. The observatory dome and walkway were completed in the Spring of 2003 with generous donations provided by Emeritus GSW Professor Millard Agerton. The Agerton Observatory is an integral part of Solar System Astronomy (PHYS1221), Stellar Astronomy (PHYS1222) and Solar System Exploration (GEOL1221). Periodically, the observatory is open to the public for organized open-house viewings of the planets, the moon and other astronomical objects and occurances.

I chose to attend GSW because it has a small teacher-to-student ratio, so I knew I could form more practical relationships with my peers and professors.

Because the department was so small, I really developed relationships with my faculty, advisors and peers in a way that I know I wouldn’t have been able to experience anywhere else. The quality of the education I received due to the small size of our department is invaluable.
