Master and Specialist of Education

Georgia Southwestern's School of Education offers Georgia's leading graduate program in terms of cost, convenience, and speed of completion. Students can complete a degree in 13 months at a fraction of the cost of most graduate programs. Southwestern's School of Education offers the following graduate degrees:

  • Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Early Childhood Education
  • Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Middle Grades Language Arts
  • Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Middle Grades Mathematics
  • Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education
  • Specialist of Education (Ed.S.) in Early Childhood Education
  • Specialist of Education (Ed.S.) in Middle Grades Education

Program Highlights

  • Classes meet on 5 Saturdays during the Fall and Spring terms and two days per week during the month of June. (16 days total) Click here for the tentative 2015-2016 class dates.
  • M.Ed will begin June, 2015 and complete June, 2016. (13 months)
  • Ed.S will begin July, 2015 and complete July, 2016. (13 months)
  • Total cost of graduate program for 2014 - 2015 was $8457, plus books.
  • No new GACE assessments are required.
  • No GRE/GMAT scores required.
  • Programs are fully accredited.

Admission Requirements

Students wishing to apply to the School of Education graduate program at Georgia Southwestern State University must submit a completed admissions packet. Incomplete packets may not be reviewed for admissions. The complete admissions packet is comprised of the following:

  1. Graduate application for admission
  2. $25.00 nonrefundable application fee
  3. Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended*
    • Ed.S. applicants need only show graduate level coursework
    • *Students who have gradated from Georgia Southwestern do not need to submit a GSW transcript or other transcripts previously received by Southwestern prior to college graduation. Students are encouraged to "Check Your Admissions Status" for transcripts needed.
  4. Administrative Recommendation Forms
  5. Professional Profile (M.Ed. Only)
  6. Commitment Letter (M.Ed. Only)
  7. Copy of Teaching Certificate
  8. Immunization form (before enrollment)
  9. Documentation of Lawful Presence (before enrollment, if applying for in-state tuition)

Candidates seeking a degree through graduate study must apply for regular admission. Individuals who already hold a master's degree must meet regular admissions requirements for a second master's degree.

Regular Admission - M.Ed.

  1. Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university
  2. Eligibility for Induction or Professional Certificate.
  3. A minimum of 2.75 undergraduate grade point average as reported on the official final transcripts from all accredited institutions attended.
  4. Two confidential Administrative Recommendation Forms, one from a Supervising Principal and one from another school administrator, Assistant Principal, Department Chair, Lead Teacher.

Regular Admission - Ed.S.

  1. Masters degree from an accredited college or university
  2. Eligibility for Induction or Professional Certificate.
  3. A minimum of 3.0 graduate grade point average as reported on the official final transcripts from all accredited institutions attended.
  4. Two confidential Administrative Recommendation Forms, one from a Supervising Principal and one from another school administrator, Assistant Principal, Department Chair, Lead Teacher.

Applicants meeting minimum requirements for admission will be considered. Acceptance is not guaranteed. The School of Education seeks the most qualified applicants for its graduate degree cohort programs.

Those Applicants denied admission may submit an appeal of the decision to the Dean of the School of Education.
