The club has served as a sponsor for student/faculty seminars, and its members have often helped the Department with its annual Mathematics Tournament. The Department wants to encourages all mathematics and mathematics/education majors, as well as anyone else with an interest in mathematics to participate. The club can serve as a forum in which students share their mathematics projects with fellow students, and learn about the wonderful and exciting world of mathematics. A goal is to see participants in the club form the nucleus of a Georgia Southwestern student chapter of the Mathematical Association of America. Such students could then go on to present honors thesis work or other research projects at regional MAA meetings, and share the excitement of their discoveries with other mathematics students and mathematicians in the Southeast. It's important that mathematics majors form a link with the greater mathematical community. For that reason we're quick to point out the great benefit of any sort of student participation in organizations devoted to mathematics: the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCTM), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the American Association for Women in Mathematics. Students have access to all membership benefits, including reduced rates on publications, and the privilege of being able to offer their work for presentation at meetings. In addition, employers often look with favor on applicants who have demonstrated an early expression of professional interest by participating in a mathematics organization as a student. So, while you are at Southwestern, come and participate in the greater mathematical community!
