Dear F-1 and J-1 students,
While you’re here in the U.S., you’re required to complete tax forms, even if you didn’t earn any income during 2015. ALL students need to complete the form 8843, even if you have not been employed in any way during 2015 in the U.S.
You must file a US Federal Tax Return if any of the following apply:
- You worked in the US (on campus employment, in a paid internship (CPT), on OPT paid employment, etc.
- You received a stipend, grant or allowance in 2015
- If you had no earnings – you must file the form 8843 (see above)
Please see instructions HERE for how to complete the Form 8843.
Georgia Southwestern State University has arranged free access to Sprintax Federal Tax preparation software. Sprintax will guide you through the tax preparation process and check if you’re due a tax refund.
If you had income in 2015, then early in 2016 you will receive your income documents (e.g. W2, 1042s) from Georgia Southwestern State University or your employer. Make sure they have your correct contact details so these can be sent to you.
If you have any questions, please email Sprintax at firstname.lastname@example.org.
