During orientation, student take several placement tests so they can be placed in classes in the appropriate levels. The ELI currently uses various types of placement tests. These tests include grammar, reading and listening tests, an oral interview, and a writing assessment. Each student is placed in classes based on the results of these tests.
Class grades are given at midterm and at the end of each semester. The student can access these grades through the GSW RAIN system online.
These grades are usually an average of the following:
Promotion: The student should have both (1) a grade of C (70%) or higher and (2) the required exit exam scores.
The director handles section changes at the beginning of a course, usually the first 2-3 days of class.
Section changes can be made for the following reasons only:
