The Office of Accommodations and Access is committed to providing an accessible environment for students to grow and develop while studying at Georgia Southwestern. We seek to provide a great experience and equal access to all programs and services amongst campus. Our office communicates and collaborates with instructors, staff and community members to build and maintain partnerships across the university.

Who Is Eligible?

To receive services and accommodations, students must identify themselves to the Office of Accommodations and Access and present official documentation of their disability. In general, a disability is defined as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, e.g., walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, working, caring for oneself, and/or performing manual tasks.

The Office serves students who have disabilities such as, but not limited to, the following:

  • Attention deficit disorder
  • Blindness or visual impairments
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Chronic illnesses (AIDS, arthritis, cancer, cardiac disease, diabetes, Lyme disease, etc.)
  • Deafness or hearing impairments
  • Epilepsy or seizure disorders
  • Learning disabilities
  • Psychiatric disabilities
  • Orthopedic impairments
  • Speech disorders
  • Traumatic brain injury

Available Services and Accommodations

Common accommodations that may be provided as required by a student's specific need include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Textbooks in an alternate format
  • Notetakers
  • Readers
  • Testing accommodations
  • Use of adaptive equipment
  • Housing accommodations

Additional Services

Other services provided by the Office include academic counseling in the form of time management, organization and study skills; assistance with course selection and registration; and referral for peer tutoring, personal counseling or campus and community services.

Policy and Procedures for Students with Disabilities

Georgia Southwestern State University's goal is to ensure equal access to academic programs and make reasonable accommodations for the needs of students with disabilities. Students should contact the Office of Accommodations and Access to request academic accommodations or address accessible issues. Please note that it is the student's responsibility to self-identify.

The Office of Accommodations and Access coordinates the compliance of Georgia Southwestern State University with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, p.l.101-336(July 26, 1990), as amended by P.L. 110-325 (September 25, 2008) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, to achieve legality and academic potential through individualized plans tailored to particular needs of students with disabilities.
