The Academic Resource Center offers SMARTHINKING online tutoring, supplemental instruction (SI) and limited peer tutoring services to all GSW students free of charge. SI Leaders and peer tutors are certified with the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC).

Students benefit most from seeking tutoring early in the semester and continuing to meet in regular SI sessions throughout the entire semester.

SMARTHINKING is a 24/7 online tutoring platform that is completely free for GSW students.

What is Supplemental Instruction?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program which offers regularly scheduled review sessions in which students are given an opportunity to review notes, discuss readings, and prepare for examinations.

SI leaders are students who have taken and passed a targeted class with an "A" or "B".  They have usually taken the class with the same professor or are recommended by the professor to facilitate SI sessions for the course. They know the course content and offer guidance through it.

Each SI leader will set up convenient weekly sessions. A student may attend as many sessions as desired.  Each one will be different because there will be new material to discuss. SI review sessions are informal.
