Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP)

Georgia Southwestern is a member of the Southwest Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) consortium, also known as the Southwestern Georgia STEM Pathways Alliance Program.

The program is designed to aid in the diversification of the nation’s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workforce by increasing the number of STEM-related degrees earned by underrepresented minority (URM) students. The initiative focuses on student development and retention as a means to help achieve that goal, with an emphasis on transforming undergraduate STEM education through innovative, evidence-based recruitment and retention strategies, and relevant educational experiences in support of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in STE disciplines. The National Science Foundation (NSF) grant-funded program will offer a limited amount of scholarship opportunities for minority students enrolled in STEM programs at GSW. The purpose of the program is to collaboratively transform the STEM learning environment at GSW and to significantly increase the number of URM students graduating with Baccalaureate degrees in STEM fields within a five-year period.

• LSAMP participants are more likely to complete their bachelor’s degrees and go on to graduate school than non-participants from all racial and ethnic backgrounds.
• Student selected for the scholar program will receive a stipend, mentoring, research and internship opportunities, invitations to research conferences, and preparation for the Graduate Research Examination (GRE).
• GSW LSAMP scholars will meet monthly with one another, as well as annually with other scholars in the consortium.
• Scholars will learn to complete and present research, as well as network in a professional environment.
• National conference participation and additional research opportunities are encouraged.
• Guest speaker presentations will also be available to GSW students who aren’t in the scholar program.
