AMERICUS (Aug. 23, 2017)—Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) economic impact on the region was $88.7 million in fiscal year 2016.  

In Americus, almost 92 percent of the sun will be covered by the moon during the solar eclipse that will take place Monday, Aug. 21. The Georgia Southwestern State University Department of Geology and Physics has made plans to help members of campus and the community view this rare event. 

Student body increases for 8th consecutive semester

AMERICUS (Aug. 18, 2017) – After the first week of classes, early figures indicate Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) will set a new record enrollment.

ALBANY, GA – Albany Technical College (ATC) and Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) held a signing for new articulation agreements in several academic programs on today in the Executive Board Room of the Logistics Education Center of the Albany Tech campus.

AMERICUS (August 14, 2017)—Harold Isaacs, Ph.D., the late professor emeritus in history, spent nearly 50 years on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW). A beloved and respected member of the GSW community, Isaacs’ legacy will live on for generations to come thanks to a bequest that was recently finalized worth more than $600,000.

AMERICUS, GA (Aug. 12, 2016)—This morning, nearly 920 college students are getting situated in their home for the next 10 months on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW). “Move-In Day” 2017 has come to Americus. The move-in process will continue throughout the weekend in the Southwestern Oaks, Magnolia and Southwestern Pines residence halls. Classes, however, do not begin until Tuesday, Aug. 15, which marks the official beginning of the fall semester.

This May, Drs. Tzvetelin Iordanov, Kailash Ghimire and Philip Szmedra taught the University 4000 Contemporary International Cultures class in Nepal. The faculty members, along with Dr. Ian Brown, led students on a trip that included: visiting Apex College where the students had the opportunity to meet and interact with Nepali college students; volunteering and building a staircase/walkway at a Nepalese village school; whitewater rafting; attending a traditional wedding; and visiting many historical sites in Nepal.

Fraternity experiences resurgence, looks forward to the future

AMERICUS, Ga. (July 5, 2017) – Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) Chi Phi Fraternity was recently recognized with the Thomas A. Gehring Award for Most Improved chapter and the Outstanding Philanthropic Achievement Award at Chi Phi Congress. The national meeting was held from June 23-25 in Richmond, Virginia.

ATLANTA – (June 29) – The Board of Regents today named Dr. Neal Weaver president of Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) in Americus. Weaver will assume his new position on July 15, 2017. Weaver is currently the vice president for university advancement and innovation at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La.

 

AMERICUS, Ga. (June 22, 2017) – On Saturday, June 17 at the first annual Paint the Town Blue gala, Sergeant Nathaniel Milledge was named Officer of the Year for the Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Department of Public Safety. The event was held in GSW’s Storm Dome.

ATLANTA – (June 20) – Board of Regents Chair C. Thomas Hopkins Jr., MD and Chancellor Steve Wrigley announced today that the Board of Regents named Dr. Neal Weaver as the sole finalist for the position of president of Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) in Americus.

AMERICUS, Ga. (June 13, 2017) – The Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Museum recently announced their quarterfinalists for the fifth annual Music Educator Award, and one of Georgia Southwestern State University’s own made the list.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 9, 2017)--Georgia Southwestern State University was recognized earlier this month by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) with a 2017 Educational Fundraising Award, which recognizes U.S. institutions for overall performance and improvement in educational fundraising programs. GSW was one of 89 colleges and universities selected from among 554 eligible institutions by CASE.
