Art students impress at Macon art show        

            AMERICUS—Georgia Southwestern State University participated in the eleventh annual scrap iron sculpture contest sponsored by Macon Iron at the Middle Georgia Art Association (MGAA) gallery last month. This year’s theme was “Junque Yard Prehistoric Creatures.”

            The competition is held as a creative way to increase awareness of the importance of recycling. The 2010 entries had to be constructed primarily of recyclable metal materials from Macon Iron and resemble some type of prehistoric creature. Georgia Southwestern students showed extremely well in the competition, winning $1900 in group and individual prizes.

GSW winners included: (Group Projects) 1st Place “Plesiosaurus-Loch Ness Monster,” Hasani Jones, Quentin Lonon, Hannah Mercer, Pamela Hood, and Dana Hudson; 2nd Place “Dodo,”Josh Nicholson, Jennifer Novak, Rebecca Shields, Carlos Moore, and Leslie Reddick; (Individual Projects) 1st Place “Nature vs. Nurture: Ovinoteryx,” Ashley Bell; 2nd Place “Taradactyl,” Tara Joyner; and (Most Humorous) “Armored Horseshoe Crab,” John Lin. The prize for “Best Use of Materials” went to “Plesiosaurus-Loch Ness Monster.”

Georgia Southwestern students also competed in an exhibition called “Rising Stars: An All College Show,” placing first, second and third. Sam Henley won first prize for “Raku Teapot;” Ashley Bell won second place for “Blue Trail Floppy Bowl;” and Justin Hodges placed third for two untitled photographs.
