GSW cafeteria set to expand
AMERICUS—Today, Georgia Southwestern State University began its newest bit of construction work. The Marshall Student Center (MSC) Cafeteria is undergoing a major renovation/addition. With dining space currently at a premium, this project has come at a pivotal time.
“Over the last two years, the number of meals served daily has increased more than 25 percent,” said Cody King, vice president of Business and Finance. “As a result, we have encountered seating issues in the dining facility and preparation issues in the serving area. Renovation will increase seating by over 20 percent for students and provide more space for meetings and large events.
“In addition, Georgia Southwestern expects daily meal counts to increase by more than five percent in Fall 2010,” added King.
Originally constructed in 1966, the MSC Cafeteria is currently 4628 square feet. After the renovation, the facility will be 6400 square feet and have a seating capacity of 425 students. The expansion will be made possible by lengthening the student dining area into what now serves as GSW’s Private Dining Hall. A new private dining space will be constructed adjacent to the current area in the MSC patio and extending towards the English Building. The capacity for a second floor will be made possible above the new private dining area, as additional future space may be needed.
The contractor for this project is Parrish Construction, and the architectural firm is Yielding, Wakeford and McGee Architects, P.C. The estimated completion date is October 1, 2010.
