Gammages receive GSW’s Aeolian Award
AMERICUS--When they're not running Gammage Print Shop, Earl and Barbara Gammage
are serving the local community and their alma mater. As a result, they were
given Georgia Southwestern State University's 2010 Aeolian Award at this year's
alumni weekend awards luncheon, the first event held in GSW's newly renovated
Wheatley Assembly Hall.
"Earl and Barbara Gammage are both
outstanding alumni whose love for and devotion to GSW are so evident on this
campus and in our community," said Karen Holloway, GSW director of Alumni
Affairs. "Their exceptional support and dedication as alumni are greatly
appreciated. I can't think of anyone more deserving of this award."
The Aeolian Award, named after the
University's alumni magazine, recognizes GSW alumni for lifetime achievement and
community involvement. Earl and Barbara graduated from Georgia Southwestern in
1950 and 1951, respectively. Since 1974, they have owned and operated Gammage
Print Shop located in downtown Americus. Gammage Print Shop was founded by
Earl's grandfather, Ernest L. Gammage, in 1923.
The Gammage's allegiance to Georgia
Southwestern has been very consistent over the years, having built a very close
relationship with the late Henry King Stanford, Ph.D., GSW's president from
1948-50. In recent years, Earl and Barbara played an important part in launching
the "Two Great Choices - One Great Community" college town initiative. This
project has raised more than $30,000 for both GSW and South Georgia Technical
College and has helped to publicize Americus throughout this region of the
state.
Earl is also a member of the GSW
Athletics Hall of Fame and played on Southwestern's first intercollegiate
baseball team.
