Professor to appear on Jeopardy Sept. 22

AMERICUS—A faculty member from Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) enjoyed a rare bit of fame earlier this summer. Marlene Allen, Ph.D., assistant professor of English, appeared on an episode of Jeopardy! in July. It is scheduled to air Tuesday, Sept. 22.

“My appearance on Jeopardy! was an exciting, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Allen. “It was over a decade in the making, as I've tried out to be a contestant on Jeopardy! ever since I was an undergraduate. It was fun getting to show what I know and compete against some of the brightest minds out there in America.

“I think my family and friends may be even more excited than I am about my being on the show,” Allen added. “All in all, this was a great experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

Celebrating its 25th season on air, Jeopardy!’s debut was in 1984. Since that time, the show has been honored with 28 Daytime Emmy Awards, 11 of them for “Outstanding Game Show/Audience Participation.” Auditions for Jeopardy! Are open to anyone 18 years of age and older, and take approximately two hours. Those who pass the 50-question video test participate in a mock version of the game and short interview session.

Allen received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Georgia Southern University and a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in English from the University of Georgia. In Spring 2009, she received the Vice President’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship at GSW.

Allen’s debut on Jeopardy! Tuesday, Sept. 22 will air at 7 or 7:30 p.m. Check your local television listings for the correct time and channel. To view a commercial designed for our local television market follow the link http://www.jeopardy.com/showguide/thisweek/.
