Georgia Southwestern receives $25,000 AT&T Grant
AMERICUS--Georgia Southwestern State University today announced that it has been awarded a $25,000 grant from AT&T Georgia to fund the LOTTS initiative (Learning Opportunities through Technology and Science) out of the Georgia Southwestern School of Computing and Mathematics. The LOTTS grant will focus on encouraging middle and high school students to enter the teaching fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Georgia Southwestern’s School of Computing and Mathematics will work with the School of Education to create virtual programs and e-Learning communities in underserved regions of the state. This effort unites with an emphasis already established at the University focusing on STEM activities.
“Our vision of connecting people helps shape our role as a corporate citizen,” said Courtney Brinson, Regional Manager, AT&T External Affairs-Georgia. “For us, corporate citizenship begins by supporting the communities where we live and work. Companies like AT&T are able to invest in innovative programs like LOTTS because of the public policy positions our legislature takes on business issues.”
Garnering the support of local officials Rep. Mike Cheokas and Sen. George Hooks was essential for GSW to be awarded the grant.
“I would like to commend Sen. Hooks and Rep. Cheokas for helping to create an environment that recognizes the importance of investing in our communities and in education,” added Brinson.

Individuals who played pivotal roles in seeing the grant through are left to right: Boris Peltsverger, Dean of the School of Computing and Mathematics; Vice President of Academic Affairs Brian Adler; Courtney Brinson of AT&T; Sen. George Hooks; math Professor John Stroyls; and Rep. Mike Cheokas.
