    GSW School of Nursing hosted its Annual Career Fair

    Thank you to all who help make the 2011 GSW School of Nursing Career Fair a smashing success!  Our rough estimate is that we had approximately 100 people attend including nursing students from Darton College and South Georgia Technical College.

     The event was a positive experience for all who attended. Many of the employers expressed how impress they were with the upcoming graduates and mentioned how professional and inquisitive they are.

            

    The Spring 2011 GSW School of Nursing graduating class attended a special senior luncheon afterwards which was coordinated by the GSW SON Office of Student Services. In the preferred smaller setting, students were dressed professionally with resume and business card in hand. Many employers were more than happy to have the opportunity to meet with the students in a smaller setting so they could spend one-on-one time with each candidate.

    GSW to host March 18 ceremony marking new Health and Human Sciences Complex construction

    AMERICUS(Feb. 25, 2011)-Georgia Southwestern State University will host a special ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday, March 18, to officially mark the beginning of construction on Phase One of the highly anticipated new Health and Human Sciences Complex.

    The community is invited to attend the gathering, which will be held on the west side of campus at the intersection of East Glessner Street and Georgia Southwestern State University Drive. The ceremony will highlight work on the first phase of a two-phase project. Local elected officials, university representatives and members of the Board of Regents will offer remarks, and refreshments will be served.

    "We have waited for and worked toward this day for a long time," said GSW President Kendall Blanchard. "This building will be a major addition to the campus and give our nursing program the room and resources it needs to expand its offerings and enhance its already stellar reputation."

    Last June, with help from Rep. Mike Cheokas and Sen. George Hooks, the state approved funding to begin the project for FY2011. And last month, the trustees of the Georgia Southwestern Foundation, Inc., voted unanimously to fund the remaining $400,000 of the $7.9 million needed for the construction project. The state approved $1.1 million for design in FY2010. The new building will provide state-of-the-art classroom and clinical space for the School of Nursing and other lab space.

    In all, this two-phase project is worth an estimated $15 million and will first build a two-story, 46,000 square foot nursing facility adjacent to GSW's Education Center and the Wheatley Administration Building.

    The second phase will construct a similarly-sized building adjacent to the Nursing facility, providing a new home for the psychology and sociology department and the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving.

    2WR, Inc. Architecture is responsible for the design, and Allstate Construction out of Tallahassee is the contractor. Allstate President Bill Weldon is a native of Plains and a graduate of Georgia Southwestern.

    Congratulations and wonderful job to our new Spring 2011 Cohort who were successfully admitted and will start the program this January. All your hard work has paid off. May many more opportunities and blessings come your way. We know you will all be amazing nursing students!

    Summer Abroad Program May 15-21, 2011 to Jamaica

    Over 20 students attended the first information session about the Summer Abroad Program May 15-21, 2011 to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Dr. Simmons, Mrs. Joy Humphrey, Ms. Ellen Elder provided students not only with general information, but students also got to feast on several authentic Jamaican dishes to get a taste of what lies ahead in the Summer.

    Part of the experience will include clinical opportunities in all disciplines of practice with exposure to nursing management that may or may not be similar to common practices in the U. S. Activities will be designed to address the following:

    • • Compare and contrast nursing management in the Western Regional Health Care System of Jamaica with nursing care provided and observed in the Adult Health, Maternal Child Clinical rotation

    • • Utilization of the nursing process to provide care that incorporates best practice guidelines, health promotion, and respect for the cultural diversity of the region

    • • Identify common disease processes prevalent in the region • Compare and contrast management of identified disease processes in the region

    • • Develop fundamental knowledge regarding the health care culture of the Western Regional Health Care System of Jamaica

    New Building on the Horizon

    A new Health and Human Services Complex is planned in the near future with construction anticipated to begin in late Fall or early Spring. The School of Nursing will be built in Phase I of the project. Phase II of the complex will consist of a second, adjoining building which will house the Rosalyn Carter Institute for Caregiving, Department of Psychology and Sociology, and Student Health Services. The facility will offer state of the technology and resources needed for nursing education. Housed in the School of Nursing will be a Clinical Learning Center which will serve as a virtual hospital. Specialized units such as med-surg, ICU, trauma, pediatrics and obstetrics will be located in the center as well as a primary care lab and basic competency lab. It will be equipped with state-of the art equipment and patient simulators that will enable students to experience highly complex patient care.

    School of Nursing Graduates 51

    The nurse pinning ceremony is a time-honored tradition when nursing faculty present newly-graduating nurses with a pin identifying the school from which they graduated. Of the 51 students who earned a bachelor of science in nursing at Georgia Southwestern State University's (GSW) spring commencement May 8, 33 took part in the pinning ceremony the night before.

    "The ceremonial pinning is a symbolic welcome to each nursing graduate entering the nursing profession, and it is largely considered to be the most meaningful event by both graduates and their families," said Sandra Daniel, Ph.D., dean of the School of Nursing. "While many customs and traditions in nursing have been abandoned over the years, the pinning of graduates with a symbolic medal of honor has continued.

    "The first nursing pin at GSW was designed by the first six graduates from the nursing program in 1956," Daniel added. "An addition to the pin was later added to represent the baccalaureate degree; however, the original design of the pin was retained. It is my honor and privilege as dean and as an alumna of GSW to welcome our class of 2010 to nursing and a long line of nurses who have continued a legacy of excellence."

    This spring's class is one of the largest in school history. With the addition of a new Health and Human Sciences Building, the capacity of GSW's School of Nursing will be increase. The new building will be three stories with the majority of the space devoted to nursing classrooms and laboratories. Construction on the new building is expected to begin sometime in the next year, pending approval from the Governor's Office.

    Of the 51 BSN graduates this spring, 26 earned degrees through the "generic" four-year track, 16 earned degrees through the Accelerated BSN Program, and nine students completed the RN to BSN program.

    2010 School of Nursing Career Fair A Success!!

    Thank you to all who helped make the 2010 GSW School of Nursing Career Fair a smashing success!  Our rough estimate is that we had approximately 160 people attend including nursing students from Darton College and South Georgia Technical College.

    We are continually amazed at how hard people work and how willing they are to go above and beyond what is expected.  The comments and feedback we have received have been so positive, employers and job-seekers alike have asked that we report how amazing our staff is, how well-organized the event was, and how beneficial it was for them to come.

    Our First Simulation Lab

    The School of Nursing received its first virtual patient simulator earlier this year. Known as iStan®, the adult mannequin looks, feels, and acts like a “real patient” and is now being utilized as a major component of student learning. The trend in nursing education is to have state-of-the art patient simulators. These simulators are now considered to be essential in terms of student learning of complex clinical skills and patient care decision making. With acuity levels of patients being greater nursing students need an opportunity to practice skills in a safe environment prior to caring for the “real patient” who is acutely ill.
