    Scholarship Opportunities

    Applications for these scholarships can be obtained from the Student Services Coordinator in the School of Nursing via phone or email at 229-931-2239 or son@canes.gsw.edu. Nursing scholarships applications will become available in January of each year and reviewed during April. The funds will be allocated for the next academic year after the review is conducted.

    Nursing Scholarships:

    Ø  Frances Patrick Scholarship
    The Frances Wynn Patrick Scholarship was established in honor of Mrs. Patrick, Class of 1942, by her husband Carl Patrick, founder of Carmike Cinemas in Columbus, GA. It is available to nursing students of good standing and it may cover up to one year of tuition and $500 fees for nursing supplies**. Recipients must re-apply each year. Selection is made by the Director of Financial Aid and the Dean of the School of Nursing.

    Ø  Shannon Peavy Knopes Scholarship
    Memorial Scholarships in the amount of $500** per year available to second year nursing majors who are in good academic standing at Georgia Southwestern, with preference given to Houston County, GA residents.

    Ø  Loveda Powell McNair Memorial Scholarship
    Brenda Hunter Browning, ASN, an alumnus of GSW’s School of Nursing (’64), established this scholarship in memory of her friend and former classmate, Loveda Powell McNair. The recipient must be enrolled in the School of Nursing and be a resident of the State of Georgia. Selection will be made by the Faculty Scholarship Selection Committee of the School of Nursing.

    Ø  J. Emory Rylander Scholarship
    Established by the family of J. Emory Rylander, founder of the Tog Shop in Americus, GA. Recipients must be enrolled full-time in the School of Nursing, possess high academic standards, and demonstrate commitment and good moral character at the university and in the community. The award may cover up to a year of tuition and $500 for nursing supplies**. Selection is made by the School of Nursing and Director of Financial Aid.

    Ø  Herschel A. Smith Scholarship
    The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia honored Dr. Herschel Smith, GSW’s first campus infirmary physician, by naming the infirmary “The Herschel A. Smith Health Center.” Dr. Smith was also instrumental in creating the nursing program at Georgia Southwestern. The award is offered to non-traditional nursing students of good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0.

    Ø  Joan Smith Scholarship
    This award was established by Dr. Joan Smith, a former Professor of Nursing at GSW, to encourage career development in nursing. This is a one year scholarship offered to graduate nursing students in need who possess a GPA of 3.0 and are enrolled in 6 hours per semester. GRE/MAT scores, activities, and leadership qualities are also considered. Selection by a committee appointed by the Dean of the School of Nursing.

    Ø  Ard Watson Scholarship
    The Ard Watson Scholarship Fund was created by his family to honor Mr. Watson, former Director of Clinical Labs at Sumter Regional Hospital, to encourage career development in nursing or other healthcare fields. Consideration is given to residents of Sumter County, Georgia with a minimum GPA of 2.85. Selection is made by the School of Nursing.

  • Ø Parker-Wheeler Scholarship 
  • The Wheeler/Parker Scholarship was established by Jean and Wes Wheeler as an
  •  endowment to honor the Parker and Wheeler families. The criterion gives consideration
    to students who have financial need and meet GSW admission standards. 
  • This scholarship will be shared by the School of Business and the School of Nursing.
  • New!  Ø  Neal Holt Holman Nursing Scholarship

    • This scholarship was established by Americus resident Tom Holman in 
    • honor of his late wife, Nell Holt Holman, who passed away in 2011. Mr. Holman and his
      sons wanted to honor Mrs. Holman’s service to the community as a charge
    •  nurse at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center, providing care to Alzheimer’s patients
      for 18 years. This scholarship will be granted on the basis of financial  need to GSW 
    • students who major in nursing – undergraduate or graduate. Preference will be given to
      students from Sumter County and surrounding areas.

    New!  Ø  Bebe Gibson Nursing Scholarship
    Established by Betsy and Henry Crisp in memory of Mrs. Crisp’s mother, BeBe Gibson. This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman, a transfer student or a current student pursuing an
    undergraduate or graduate degree in the School of Nursing at GSW. The criteria are financial need, preference given to students from Sumter, Lee & Clay counties in
    Georgia, or to non-traditional students who have established verifiable residency in such counties, and students with a minimum 3.0 GPA. The number, amount and recipients will be determined by the Scholarship Committee of the
    School of Nursing at GSW.


         ** All Scholarship Awards are based on fund availability. Amounts awarded may vary based on availabilty of funds.

    Tuition Reimbursement opportunities-Contact the human resources department of a hospital where you think you would possibly want to work. Ask them about tuition reimbursement and scholarship assistance. Hospitals will usually offer to pay your students loans, if that is an option.
