Internship Types
There are five different internship opportunities available through the GSW Internship Program:
Internship (INTN 4920A). This seminar is used for an internship with a for-profit company or agency in the local area. In this internship the student would need to find his or her own placement, and typically would work ½ time (21 hours a week), earning 3 s.h. credit.
Georgia Internship (INTN 4920B). In a Georgia Internship the student finds a placement in a public or non-profit agency. Students in this program typically work ½ time (21 hours a week) throughout the semester, earning 3 s.h. credit.
Legislative Internship (INTN 4920C). This program is available only in spring semester, while the Georgia General Assembly is in session. A legislative internship is recommended for the political science major or minor. The internship provides a small stipend, and housing in Atlanta is also available. Legislative interns are assigned to a specific legislator for the duration of the legislative session.
Governor's Internship (INTN 4920D). For this program the student finds placement in a state or non-profit agency. Most of these are located outside of the Americus area. Interested students must apply to the Governor's Internship program in Atlanta. The application process requires an interview with the program staff, and then with prospective agencies. Selection of interns is based on interests, area of expertise, maturity, and academic record. Only juniors, seniors, and graduate students are eligible for a Governor's Internship. Stipends are available.
The Governor's Internship program currently works with approximately 300 agencies, including:
- Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Atlanta
- Department of Natural Resources (various locations statewide)
- Governor's Office of External Affairs, Atlanta
- Martin Luther King Outreach Mission, Albany
Congressional Internship (INTN 4920E). This program is another good choice for the political science major or minor. The application process is highly competitive. Applicants must have an excellent academic and extra-curricular record. Students accepted to this program would spend a full academic year (fall and spring semesters) in Washington D.C. working for one of Georgia's Senators or the Representative from the student’s congressional district.
