GSW Email Account
Student E-mail Account
To: GSW Students
From: Office of Information and Instructional Technology (OIIT)
- GSW has set up an email account for every enrolled student.
- Email will serve as an official means of sending information to students
by faculty and staff.
- Faculty will determine how email will be used in their classes, making the
assumption that students' official “@radar.gsw.edu” accounts are being
accessed and use email for their classes accordingly.
- Students are expected to check their official GSW email address on a
frequent and consistent basis and have the responsibility to recognize that
certain communication may be time-critical.
- By using your email account you agree to email policy at
http://www.gsw.edu/~oiit/policies/emailpolicy.html.
To verify your email address
Log into Rain https://rain.gsw.edu .
Click on Personal Information and then click on View E-mail Addresses.
One of the email addresses should be “<user>@radar.gsw.edu”. This is your email
address on radar. The part before the @symbol is your username to log into
radar.
Your password is initially set as the last 6 digits of your GSW ID number. If you signed up for classes before Spring semester of 2005, your default password is the last 6 digits of your social security number. Please note: the last digit on your GSW ID card is used by OSL, and is not part of your GSW ID number. Click here to get your GSW ID number.
It is recommended you change your password using the instructions provided below
and at
http://www.gsw.edu/~oiit/studentemail.shtml .
NOTE: The '@radar.gsw.edu' part of the address is *not* part of
your username to log on to radar.
To use your email account
Go to http://radar.gsw.edu/ .
Enter the login name and password that you found in RAIN (as above).
To receive new mail, click INBOX on the left-hand frame of the window.
Click Options at the top of the screen to change features of your email
To change your password
Log in to radar http://radar.gsw.edu
.
Click on Options at the top of the screen.
Click on Change of Password on the options page.
Enter your current password and new password (twice) as instructed. Please make
sure your new password follows the guidelines set forth in the instructions on
the page or it will not work!
Click Change the Password. The page that comes up should say, “Your password was
changed successfully”. If you receive an error instead of a success message,
please try again and make sure you follow the password guidelines.
If you forget your password you can call 931-2074 and provide your email
address, and name. Your password will be reset to the
last six digits of your GSW ID number.
To forward your account
If a student chooses, he or she can forward their official GSW email address to
another account (e.g. AOL, hotmail, or Yahoo), but at their own risk. The
University will not be responsible for the handling of email by outside vendors.
Having email forwarded does not absolve a student from the responsibilities
associated with official communication sent to his or her “@radar.gsw.edu”
account.
Instructions for forward your student email account:
Log in to radar http://radar.gsw.edu .
Click on Options at the top of the screen.
Click on Mail Forwarding Options on the options page.
Read the warning “changing this setting will overwrite the .forward file” in
your home directory. Usually this is not a problem, but remember that if you
change this setting, it will overwrite any previous settings.
Enter the email address you want to forward mail to and click Submit. It will
take you back to the options page with the note Added “<email>” at the top of
the page. If you receive some error instead of this message, go back to step 3.
Possible problems with your account
If you're having problems with your account, there are a few things you
might want to look at:
1) In the "Name:" field, make sure you're putting in your username, not your
email address -- I.E. "user", not "user@radar.gsw.edu".
2) Make sure you are trying to log in using radar's webmail interface at
http://radar.gsw.edu -- you can also get
there from the GSW main page (http://www.gsw.edu)
by clicking on the "Webmail" icon and then "Students" on the menu that drops
down. Please note that radar does not allow POP connections, so you can *not*
use a mail client like eudora to retrieve email via POP.
3) Make sure you are using a supported web browser. Radar's web interface has
been tested with Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and Mozilla Firefox.
4) Make sure cookies are turned on in your browser settings.
5) Make sure "Content Advisor" (under the "Content" tab of the "Internet
Options" control panel) is disabled.
6) Try using your default password -- the last 6 digits of your GSW ID number.
If you still have problems, email the System
Administrator from an alternate email address, or call 931-2074 and provide
your email address, name, and a description of the problem.
Reclaiming quota space
Each student is only allowed 8 MB of space on radar. If you exceed
this limit, you will not be able to receive email. Here are a few tips to keep
you from having this problem.
Make sure you purge your Trash folder every now and then to free up
space from deleted emails. On the web interface, if you look on the folder view,
there will be a "purge" link next to your trash folder when there is something
in it.
Also, make sure your "Sent" folder doesn't get out of control. If a message has
been there for 3 months, it's probably safe to delete it.
Try deleting emails one or two at a time instead of all at once, purging after
every deletion (you may have to "Refresh folder view" to purge).
If you're having trouble deleting large emails (you get "disk quota exceeded"
while moving) try this little trick:
- Log in to radar
- Click "Options" at the top of the page
- Click "Folder Preferences"
- Select "[Do Not Use Trash]" in the drop-down menu next to "Trash Folder" under
the "Special Folder Options" heading
- Click submit -- Now "delete" removes an email from the server instead of moving
it to the Trash folder.
- Go to your Inbox and delete unneeded emails
- Now you can go back to Options/Folder Preferences and change that drop-down menu
from "[Do Not Use Trash]" to "Trash" (as it was set before)
