September 11 Online Resources

The following is not intended to be a holistic or even especially thorough selection of resources but rather is meant to provide a starting point for reliable data available on the Internet.  While online directories can greatly assist in finding reliable information sources, none can approach self guided and informed research.

Countries

An outstanding concise guide to countries and their governments is the CIA World Factbook located online at http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html  Countries are indexed alphabetically in a "just the facts" format with maps, flags, and brief information about their government, economy, terrain, and other pertinent data.

Culture

The culture of Afghanistan is profiled by the University of Toronto at  http://cwr.utoronto.ca/cultural/english2/Afghanistan/AfghanistanENG.htm in a general reader format which includes links to articles as well as recipes and "Did you knows?" throughout the page.  Not a scholarly site per se, but good background information and cultural insight.

Terrorism

Vanderbilt University has constructed an exceptional online resource to world terrorism.  http://www.library.vanderbilt.edu/romans/terrorism.html The site is less original material than a very well organized directory of news agencies, federal and international organizations, and other educational resources dedicated to international terrorism.  Vanderbilt is home to the world's largest audio and video news archive and this has been incorporated into the project as well.

Joyner Library of East Carolina University has also assembled a series of links more specific to bin Laden and al-Qaeda available at http://www.lib.ecu.edu/govdoc/terrorism.html As time progresses more libraries and agencies will be developing increasingly detailed directories and subject guides.  They will be added to this site as time and necessity allow.  No sites will ever be holistic and for the best results those interested would be best served by performing their own library and Internet research.
