Library Newsletter Fall 2001
In This Issue:
From The
Director's Desk
The James Earl Carter Library's newsletter, "Check It
Out", is entering its second year of publication and the
reception it has received from the GSW alumni, friends, and campus
community has been very positive and gratifying. We thank
you for your support!
In this issue, we are focusing on three serendipitous Library
events. In July, we welcomed Jonathan C. Darby to our staff
as our new Reference/User Services Librarian with responsibility
for coordinating the Library's Instructional and Distance Learning
Program. In his 3 months at GSW, Jon's witty, knowledgeable,
and enthusiastic service has won him many plaudits. If you
are in the vicinity of the Library, do stop by and introduce
yourself to our newest staff member.
A phone call in July informed me that the JEC Library had been
named in the will of the late Mrs. John Paul Jones as the
beneficiary of the Dr. and Mrs. John Paul Jones Music
Collection. We feel deeply honored to have inherited this
wonderful collection of Dr. Jones, the former Director of the
Humanities Division at GSW. We also wish to thank Mr. Burton
Lenk, brother-in-law of Mrs. Jones, and his wife, executors of the
estate, who were so helpful in facilitating the transfer of the
collection from Tennessee to GSW.
We completed work on our new state-of-the-art computer
lab/instructional facility just in time to host a session with Dr.
Stephen Portch, Chancellor of the University System of Georgia,
during his visit to our campus on September 20th. The
Library is grateful to President Michael Hanes and Dr. Cathy
Rozmus, Vice President for Academic Affairs, for selecting and
funding the Library proposal, the Instructional Technology
Committee for its support and advice, and Physical Facilities,
Administrative Computing and Purchasing for their extraordinary
efforts in implementing this wonderful new facility. It was
truly a collaborative effort which has resulted in a facility
which will be a great boon to all our users.
Again, our thanks go out to the Library's supporters whose
donations and gifts permit us to improve our collections and
services. We look forward to hearing from you and appreciate
your suggestions.

Receives New Computer Lab!
After
months of hard work by all involved, the Library's Conference Room
II was transformed into a new computer lab/instructional
facility. The new lab was opened on Tuesday, September 25,
2001. This facility has 20 state-of-the-art workstations,
SMARTBoard, an instructional workstation, and LCD projection
system. One of the workstations is wheelchair
accessible. Additional chairs allow seating for
approximately 40 people. The workstations have Microsoft
Office, Internet Explorer, Acrobat Reader and Front Page installed
on them. In addition to the standard floppy drive, a DVD-ROM
drive is also installed on each workstation.
To celebrate, an Opening Reception was held on Friday, October
5th from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
The lab is open during the following hours, unless reserved for
a class. The reserved times are posted on the door.
Students, faculty and staff of Georgia Southwestern State
University have first priority in using the lab.

Jonathan Darby
The newest member of
the James Earl Carter Library staff is Jonathan Darby, the new
Reference/User Services Librarian and Coordinator of the Library's
Instructional Program. Jon is a recent (December 2000)
graduate from the University of Alabama School of Library and
Information Studies and is very happy to be at Georgia
Southwestern State University. A native of a small town in
Alabama, Jon earned a B.A. in history from Auburn University at
Montgomery.
This is his first position as an academic librarian although he
has previous experience as a medical librarian. His
professional background is a blend of supervisory positions in
customer service and paraprofessional positions in the mental
health field.
In addition to reference duties, the things he hopes to
accomplish while at GSW are the development of a web-based
tutorial, a distance learning web page, and other projects
designed to aid students in their intellectual development.
Jon's long range plans include earning a subject Masters degree
in either history or psychology but, for now, he is more
interested in gaining fluency in Spanish and computerese. Another
professional goal is to eventually work and study at any of
several American universities in Europe and Asia. His
interests include almost all areas of history (particularly
Classical, Byzantine, the Enlightenment, World War II, and the
history of information technologies from Olduvai Gorge to Silicon
Valley), science fiction, movies, theater, astronomy, medical
advances, cognitive psychology, popular culture, and most anything
else. While he doesn't consider himself a Renaissance Man,
he likes to at least think of himself as a High Middle Ages sort
of guy.
Jon's great sense of humor is readily apparent and he has the
ability to put those seeking reference assistance immediately at
ease. He is sincerely glad to be at GSW and looks forward to
helping patrons in any way. The Library is pleased to have
him here.

A Gift of
Music
In July of 2001, the James Earl Carter Library became the
beneficiary of the music collection from the estate of the late
Dr. John Paul Jones, former Director of the Humanities Division at
Georgia Southwestern College from 1954 to 1962. The
collection includes books, records, and sheet music from the
nineteenth century through the 1960's.
Dr. Jones conducted the Glee Club while at GSW, as well as,
taught English, piano, and voice. He and his wife were
active in community activities and presented many musical programs
at area churches and civic organizations. Dr. Jones also
started the Albany Conservatory of Music in Albany, Georgia, where
he and his wife were an integral part of the lives of 400 students
a year.
Dr. John Paul Jones received his B.A. from Tulsa University,
his M.A. from the University of Iowa, and his Ph.D. from George
Peabody College for Teachers. He was a multitalented person
with a sharp sense of humor. His musical taste covered all
areas from opera to pop. He published many music articles,
some band music, and several books. His arrangements
included a piano duet of The Entertainer, and an easy
teaching piece, Country Rock.
Dr. and Mrs. Jones retired and moved to Athens, Tennessee.
The James Earl Carter Library is proud to be the recipient of
Dr. Jones's collection.
