The English department at Southwestern helps students to develop their critical thinking skills and their ability to articulate their thoughts. The department offers majors in English with a Literature concentration, English with a Professional Writing concentration, and English with Teaching Certification. The Literature program foster students' critical engagement with the world by exposing them to various literary perspectives. Small, seminar-style classes offer majors unique opportunities for significant engagement of material and one-on-one interaction with professors and other students. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in numerous extracurricular activities and to work on and be featured in the school's Clay and Pine and Sirocco publications.
