Special Education

The Special Education program at Southwestern prepares candidates to teach individuals with disabilities from Kindergarten through 12th grade. All students seeking initial certification in Special Education are required to complete the Special Education Block prior to Student Teaching. Students spend approximately 180 hours as interns serving special education pupils in public schools under the supervision of master teachers. Additionally, they are enrolled in university coursework on campus. Students must also meet the regular 900 hour field experience requirement (state of Georgia requirement) – half of which is satisfied during student teaching.
