Georgia Southwestern—along with the state’s 35 other public colleges and universities—had a substantial impact on the state’s economy during the 2009 fiscal year, generating 112,336 jobs and contributing over $12.6 billion into local communities. More

GSW hosts 2,000 students via camps during summer 2010

When school let out in May and the heat settled in, Georgia Southwestern State University’s campus saw no shortage in students. Coupled with those studying during June and July terms, campers honing their athletic skills and learning the values of leadership have been a constant. In all, roughly 2,000 students have or will be “camping” at GSW this summer. More

GSW SIFE team competes in national competition

Having won a regional championship in Atlanta in April of this year, the Georgia Southwestern SIFE Team competed at the National Exposition in Minneapolis May 11-13. More than 160 SIFE teams across the nation participated. More

Marshall Student Center addition, renovation continues

Wilson to serve as GSW School of Business interim dean

Elizabeth Wilson, Ph.D., professor of business and director of the School of Business Administration Undergraduate Program, has agreed to serve as the interim dean of the School of Business Administration, effective June 19, 2010. Wilson will fill the position vacated by Dean John Kooti, Ph.D., who accepted a dean’s position at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. More

Birkel headed to South Korea and China as part of Fulbright-Hays Grant Program

In March, Georgia Southwestern State University and the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving (RCI) extended their reach internationally after creating RCI Korea. For five weeks this summer, RCI will expand its intercultural competence even further when Executive Director Rick Birkel, Ph.D., travels to South Korea and China as part of a Fulbright-Hays Grant. Regents approve GSW Master of Arts in English

Today, the Board of Regents approved Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) newest graduate degree program, a Master of Arts in English with an emphasis on critical studies in literacy and communication. More

GSW creates RCI-Korea

Georgia Southwestern President Kendall Blanchard, Ph.D. and his wife Connie Blanchard, Ph.D., recently returned from a trip to Korea with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, and RCI Executive Director Rick Birkel, Ph.D.  The main purpose of the trip was to establish a Rosalynn Carter Institute in Korea. On Monday, March 22, at The Cyber University of Korea in Seoul, Mrs. Carter and President Blanchard signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding officially creating a Rosalynn Carter Institute in Korea. Third World Studies meeting in Ghana makes history

The 27th annual meeting of the Association of Third World Studies (ATWS), Inc., was held at the Elmina Beach Resort in Cape Coast, Ghana Nov. 21-24. The conclave featured 100 attendees from around the world who participated in 18 panels and round table discussions that focused on the theme, “Celebrating Change, Defining the Future: Social Justice, Democracy and Cultural Revival.” More

National Quality Caregiving Network Announces 2009-11 Grantees

The National Quality Caregiving Network (NQCN), a partnership between Johnson & Johnson and the RCI, funds pilot projects that embed evidence-based caregiver programs in diverse and easily accessible community settings and delivery systems. Recently announced 2009-2011 grantees will receive $100,000 for a two-year period to help support this work. More

Garrison accepts post as Lagrange College VPAA

Lagrange College President Dan McAlexander yesterday announced that Dr. David Garrison was Lagrange’s new Vice President of Academic Affairs. Garrison served as Dean of Georgia Southwestern State University’s College of Arts and Sciences since August 2006. His new position begins Feb. 1. More

Regents Approve 8 Percent Budget Reduction
New mandatory student fees included

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents today approved plans to adjust the System’s budget from a six percent reduction ($135 million) to an eight percent reduction level, ($176 million) for the current fiscal year (FY2010). The Board’s actions call for new reductions to the System’s 35 public colleges and universities as well as implementing an additional mandatory student fee. The new mandatory fee for GSW students will be $150. More

GSW History Professor Richard C. Hall, Ph.D. is named recipient of the Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) 2009-2010 Featured Scholar Award.  The announcement was made today by President Kendall Blanchard. More

Georgia Apply to College Week

This week, Nov. 2-6 is Georgia Apply to College Week. High school seniors are given the opportunity to apply to college using GAcollege411.org. Volunteers from Georgia colleges and universities, including Georgia Southwestern, are on hand to assist students as they complete their application. The focus is on providing assistance to first generation students as they navigate the college application process. More

2009 Student/Faculty Gap Analysis completed

Earlier this fall 363 Incoming Freshmen and 92 Faculty members participated in the inaugural "2009 Student/Faculty Gap Analysis."  This comprehensive survey project is designed to provide GSW students, faculty, staff, and administrators with an insightful comparison of student and faculty attitudes, beliefs, and opinions regarding a number of important educational, academic, and social issues. More

GSW hosts 1,000 students at Americus Probe Fair

The Georgia Southwestern Admissions Office hosted the Americus Probe Fair Tuesday, Nov. 3 in the Student Success Center. Over 1,000 high school juniors and seniors attended from Americus-Sumter High School, Southland Academy, Marion County High School, Macon County High School, Dooly County High School, Webster County High School, Fullington Academy in Pinehurst, Crisp Academy in Cordele, and the Deerfield Windsor School in Albany.  More

GSW, GPC partner for Honors Program agreement

Earlier this fall Georgia Perimeter College and Georgia Southwestern State University signed an articulation agreement allowing students in the Honors Program at Georgia Perimeter to be admitted seamlessly into Georgia Southwestern's Honors Program. Georgia’s first Professional Golf Management Program will begin at Georgia Southwestern State University in Fall 2010. The announcement was made official today following final approval at yesterday’s GSW Academic Affairs Committee. More

Regents Approve Revised Core Curriculum for University System

The University System of Georgia’s (USG) governing body, the Board of Regents, took a step today to revise the core undergraduate curriculum. The regents approved a revised core curriculum, the basic courses all students must take in order to earn a degree, in order to help students complete their majors in a timely way, strengthen the focus on liberal arts, preserve the ability of students to transfer courses across institutions, and boost the assessment of student learning. The new core will go into effect in the fall of 2011. More

Georgia Southwestern State University, like all schools across the country, is addressing health concerns regarding flu outbreaks on their campuses. At Georgia Southwestern, there have been 9 cases of students with flu-like symptoms who have reported to Student Health Services, the primary point of contact for all students who are not feeling well. GSW enrollment soars over 3000

The enrollment at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) has reached another record high.  As of the end of the day on Friday, August 21, 3033 students had enrolled.  This is the first time that more than 3,000 students have been enrolled at GSW during any one semester. More

Freshman share first year experiences through Web blogs

Beginning Thursday, August 20, six freshman at Georgia Southwestern State University have agreed to share their first year experiences on the University's website through a series of blogs. From student life to study hall, these first year students will offer words of wisdom to prospective students and interesting anecdotes to whoever happens to visit the site. More

Residence hall ribbon cutting Aug. 14

In just under seven months, Georgia Southwestern State University has completed its newest residence hall, Magnolia. This is GSW’s third newly constructed residence hall within the last four years. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for Friday, August 14 at 1:30 p.m. to commemorate the occasion. Magnolia is located on Perimeter Road behind the GSW Education Center. More

Having won a regional championship in Atlanta earlier this year, the Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team earned first runner-up honors in their league at the National Exposition in Philadelphia, Pa. May 10-12. Georgia Southwestern SIFE finished among the top 32 teams in the nation and as the highest ranked team in Georgia. More
