GSW SIFE 2009 - 2010 Project
REMEMBER THAT ALL PROJECTS MUST BE VIDEO RECORDED & PHOTOGRAPHED
MARKETING & ADVERTISING ON CAMPUS MUST BE COORDINATED THRU OSL
Economic Survey & Luncheon –
SIFE students travel to Americus grocery stores & list prices of certain pre-selected foods. Those prices are written & then submitted to Dr. Kooti within 3 days. Transportation not provided to stores.
Later during the Spring Semester, this information is used and then presented to our Business Advisory Board at a Luncheon in GSW Formal Dining Hall. Lunch is provided to attendees.
Preview Day –
SIFE students set up a booth outside of the Marshall Student Center showcasing SIFE accomplishments & explaining prospective GSW students about SIFE’s purpose and goals during Campus Preview Day along with other campus organizations. Leader will be responsible for ensuring we have tri-fold to display pictures and “borrowing” SIFE awards from Dr. Kooti for display as well. Awards must be returned in same condition as when loaned by Dr. Kooti. Typically, SIFE provides a small bit of candy to attract attention for the table. Hopefully gain recruitment of new students. SIFE can be for everyone and is not limited to Business Students.
Duel
SIFE students will make / engineer from scratch an environmental friendly product from recycled goods. The raw materials / recyclables are pre-selected for SIFE. The final product needs to be creative & usable in real life. The final product is then showcased and presented in front of judges in Phoenix, Arizona. SIFE students also create a presentation showcasing and explaining their product to the judges. The winning final SIFE team gets their product “sold” at Wal*Mart stores. Transportation & lodging provided for participants. Food is not provided by SIFE.
Fundraising / Wine Tasting-
SIFERS sell tickets to community to participate in wine tasting event at the Windsor Hotel. SIFERS must work closely with wine distributors to maximize profit for fundraising. In the past, the Windsor has given us availability to their distributors for this event. SIFERS will choose the best vendor with the guidance of Dr. Kooti. SIFERS will also be responsible for all marketing and advertising of the fundraiser. SIFERS will set a date also, typically around Valentine’s Day. Tickets average $25.00 per person or $40.00 couple. One free set of tickets are given to Dr & Mrs. Kendall Blanchard. SIFERS must also arrange for 2 SIFERS to guard entrance to check tickets. SIFERS must also help staffers at the Windsor with any outstanding things, such as table setting or card placements. Tickets are printed via Dr Kooti’s contacts. Seek his guidance here. Attire is Cocktail Dress Formal. SIFERS under legal age of 21 are not permitted to drink alcoholic beverages at this function.
Fundraising / Chick-fil-A
Because of the success of this project Fall 2009, SIFE is considering continuing this project in future semesters. Leaders will coordinate purchasing Chick Fil A sandwiches and transporting back to GSW. Fall 2009- SIFE chose to sell a sack lunch. This lunch included sandwich, bag of lays chips plain, choice of dessert & choice of drink. Desserts (cookies and brownies) were homemade by SIFE Leaders. SIFE sold tickets for this lunch for $5.00 for students and $6.00 for non-students. SIFE sold all 300 sandwich lunches successfully. Tickets are printed via Dr Kooti’s contacts. Seek his guidance here. Approximate income obtained was $500.00. SIFERS will be responsible for marketing and advertising on this project.
Building Bridges – ( Criminal History Required for mentors )
This project is two-fold. The first tier of this project is mentoring students from our local Performance Learning Center. The PLC is a High school for disadvantaged students. SIFERS would be trained in a onetime session with Quay Lively from the Sumter County Mentor Program. This session lasts approx 1.5 hours at the Stein Center, downtown Americus. Once the training is completed, SIFERS are matched with PLC students, same gender, and then can start mentoring. The mentoring part of this project requires a weekly time commitment of at least 30 minutes for the duration of the semester. These 30 minutes does not include travel time to and from the PLC. Mentoring students can include tutoring but is mostly about encouraging these students, being a positive role model for them, & being their friend that is dependable and not judgmental. Transportation to and from PLC not provided by SIFE.
The second tier to this project is doing a group presentation at the PLC for the students. The presentation must fall under one of SIFE’s 6 judging criteria. Leaders should seek guidance from Dr. Kooti as to the topic to present. The past presentations have involved Success Skills. Spring 2009 – How to complete job applications & applications for GSW Admission. Fall 2009 – Job Shadowing. Spring 2010 – Entrepreneurship. SIFERs will design this presentation from scratch. SIFERS will also be responsible for coordinating the schedule with the PLC as to their availability for presentation date. Leader will be responsible for contacting Lisa Kelly Smith from the Sumter County LEAP Program for an invitation to the presentation. Transportation not provided by SIFE; however, it is often available because of other students going to PLC the same day.
** There is significant information available for Entrepreneurship presentation. Please see Allison Sterling.
Fast Track Staley Middle School–(Criminal History required for mentors)
This project will be very similar to Building Bridges. Since this will be a new SIFE initiative all details have not been worked out. SIFE will not provide transportation to Staley Middle.
Pedal Pass –
SIFERS will fundraise and solicit funds from local organizations in order to purchase bicycles. These bikes will then be used as advertisements in motion. This will be done by “renting” advertising spaces to local business & then placing advertisement on bicycle. SIFERS will call local businesses to solicit the funds from local businesses. SIFERS will also create the advertisements and place them on bikes. SIFERS will also create a presentation about environmental awareness &/ or recycling. During this presentation some attendees will “win” a chance to use the bikes during the current semester.
SIFERS may partner with the Science Departments to seek help with the presentation.
Biz Bowl –
SIFERS contact several local and surrounding High Schools to invite them to GSW to participate in this business knowledge competition. The high school students are usually in business related classes such as Marketing or FBLA. There are prizes awarded for the winning High school and possibly first runner up. Seek guidance from Dr. Kooti on that. The competition is set up as a PowerPoint and jeopardy type layout. Whichever team answers a business related question from the PowerPoint presentation correctly gets a point until all schools are finished and a winner is selected. Lunch is normally provided by SIFE. Please seek guidance from Dr. Kooti on this. Two surrounding high schools that may be interested in participating are Crisp County High School (Susan Fuller) and Marion County High School (Buena Vista, Ms. McAllister from FBLA)
Can for Hunger –
Fall 2009 semester SIFE has elected to have a Talent Show and ask for canned food in lieu of cash money for admittance. Reserving the Arts Building or Lake House is required. Some lead time is necessary as it takes time to reserve these locations. SIFE has planned on giving $100.00 cash reward to winner of talent show. SIFERS will be responsible for marketing and advertising. Some flyers should be posted in all dorms across campus, places to eat, GSW TV, campus emails, etc. Of course, all flyers must be pre –approved by Office of Student Life. Student emails can be sent out by Josh Curtin.
Sam’s Club Environmental Sustainability Challenge-
SIFERS will help 2 pre-chosen companies create strategies to help educate small businesses about opportunities for going green. Finding low cost, creative solutions by helping companies find cost savings in sustainable actions ranging from installing motion-sensor paper towel dispensers to switching to energy efficient bulbs. These sustainable solutions should also help improve the company’s bottom line. Some travel to Albany, Ga. will be required. SIFE will not provide transportation. Winners of this project win a paid trip to Bentonville, Ar. Sam’s Club & to meet with Sam’s Club Executives.
Books for Africa –
GSW SIFE supports global literacy by gathering, boxing and shipping used textbooks from our community & university then shipping them to students in Africa. GSW SIFE partnered with Better World Books for this project and over the past six years, Better World Books has donated over $7.3 million in global literacy efforts.
Crisp County High School-
SIFERS will help mentor students in the Entrepreneurship class led by Susan Fuller. It is believed that mentoring will not last more than 2-3 weeks. It is unknown at this point if criminal histories will be required for mentors. Fall 2009, the class was working on preparing business plans. Ms. Fuller would like SIFE students to be judges as to who has the best business plan. Because this will be a new project, we are uncertain if transportation will be provided by SIFE.
Sarah Cobb Elementary School –
Micro Society – SIFERS will travel to Sarah Cobb to help students “run” their small businesses models. This may include helping with financials, marketing, and every aspect of running a real life business. Transportation not provided by SIFE.
SIP- ( Student Incubator Project )
This project involves reviewing a business plan for actual small businesses. SIFE helps this small business by offering a small monetary grant to help this company financially.
SIFE Mixer-
GSW SIFE hopes to throw a mixer to invite SIFERS and prospective SIFERS to socialize together in an informal setting outside of classroom. This is a new GSW initiative so more information available soon.
