AMERICUS (Dec. 5, 2011)--Retired Americus resident Tom Holman finalized an endowed nursing scholarship recently at Georgia Southwestern State University in honor of his late wife, Nell Holt Holman, who passed away earlier this year.
Mrs. Holman worked as a charge nurse at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center, providing care to Alzheimer’s patients for 18 years. Prior to the construction of the Alzheimer’s Unit, she served an important role by meeting with the architect and helping with the Unit’s design. Mrs. Holman retired from Magnolia Manor in 1992 as the Patient Assessment coordinator.
“We are grateful to Mr. Holman for endowing this scholarship in memory of his wife, who served our community for many years as a registered nurse,” said Sandra Daniel, dean of the School of Nursing. “Students in a nursing program need to fully concentrate on their studies, and this is often not possible without scholarship support. We are very fortunate that Mr. Holman understands and values nursing education through this endowment. It will assist us in our ability to prepare future nurses.”
Established by Holman and his sons, the Nell Holt Holman Nursing Scholarship will be granted on the basis of financial need to GSW students who major in nursing – undergraduate or graduate. Preference will be given to students from Sumter County and surrounding areas.
“We are extremely grateful to Mr. Holman,” said GSW President Kendall Blanchard. “His gift will not only ensure that his wife’s legacy will live on forever, it will also make it possible for many students in the years to come to pursue their dreams of becoming a nurse.”
