AMERICUS (April 9, 2014)—Eleven Georgia Southwestern State University students traveled west on Saturday, April 5, presenting papers during a Phi Alpha Theta regional conference at Auburn University. Phi Alpha Theta is a National History Honor Society.

Participating students were Davis Duffey of Winder, Ga. (History); Andre Ivey of Thomasville, Ga. (Sociology); Lenard Martin of Lithonia, Ga. (Music); Zach Moates of Braselton, Ga. (History w/teaching certificate); Erin Stroup of Warner Robins, Ga. (Business Management); Whitney Thornton of Albany, Ga. (History); Jake Timmerman of Dawson, Ga. (History w/teaching certificate); Kassandra Tuten of Leesburg, Ga. (History); Michael Van Ham of Peachtree Corners, Ga. (Political Science); Mallory Wall of Ellaville, Ga. (Political Science); and Jairus Whitley of Americus, Ga. (History).

Each student gave a 15-minute presentation. Afterwards, a faculty member from the Auburn Department of History provided a commentary of each paper and opened the floor for general discussion from the audience.

The papers covered many different topics, including feminist activism in the 1960s; women’s political representation in Congress; religion and presidential politics; genocide in Armenia; the social role of child actors; race, labor, and the blues; competing historical interpretations of the age of discovery; race and the family; and race, ethnicity, and children’s literature.

The students were accompanied by two Georgia Southwestern faculty members: Susan Bragg, Ph.D. assistant professor of history, and D. Jason Berggren, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science. Bragg is the advisor for the Phi Alpha Theta history honor society chapter at GSW, and Berggren is the advisor for the Pi Sigma Alpha political science honor society chapter.
