AMERICUS (Dec. 16, 2013)—Georgia Southwestern State University’s club fishing team has seen much success during its four-year existence, having won some tournaments and finishing well in others. Team captain Chandler Ray of Arlington, Ga., and his brother Carson continued that success, recently finishing seventh at the Wackem College Open on Lake Lanier.

“We had a really good practice and thought we could catch 12 to 14 pounds each day,” said Chandler Ray. “The cold weather that rolled in really affected how the fish were biting on day one when we only had nine pounds. On day two, we went back to the same areas but had a different approach. We had the second biggest bag on day two with over 13 pounds.”

The Wackem Open is hosted by the University of Georgia fishing team and is the only college tournament that offers national championship rings. The tournament included 45 teams mainly from the Southeastern U.S. The Ray brothers finished with a two-day total of 22.86 pounds of largemouth bass. The winning team was from Auburn University with a total of 30.48 pounds. The Wackem Open is an officially sanctioned Cabela’s Collegiate Bass Fishing event and an Association of Collegiate Anglers tournament series event.

The Wackem Open was the second tournament fished by GSW’s club team this year. The other was hosted by Darton State College at Lake Eufaula, featuring 15 teams. Georgia Southwestern finished first. Over the last four years, Chandler has fished in roughly 30 college tournaments.

Chandler graduated Saturday, Dec. 14 with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in marketing. His last collegiate fishing tournament will be Jan. 3 at Lake Okeechobee in Florida unless the team qualifies for next year’s national tournament hosted by Young Harris College.

To compete, the team must provide their own boats and gas in order to travel to tournaments. GSW helps provides support with funding for entry fees and some overnight stay. To offset their out-of-pocket expenses, the team works at acquiring corporate sponsorships. For more information about the GSW Club Fishing Team, call (229) 931-2365.
