AMERICUS (Feb. 28, 2013) -- A name that is synonymous with service in Americus is Len Hicks. At Georgia Southwestern State University's (GSW) annual alumni awards brunch recently, Hicks was honored with the Leewynn J. Finklea Outstanding Alumni Award.
The Finklea Award, named in honor of the university's first alumni director, recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to campus life, the alumni association, or the university.
Hicks has been a member of the GSW National Alumni Association since 2009. During that time he has worked nearly event. In particular, he helped organize and design the course for the first-ever Alumni Poker Run in 2012.
His history of volunteerism in the Americus community is decades strong. Since 1972, Hicks has been a very active member of the American Red Cross' Flint River Chapter, having served as chair and as the state volunteer lead for sheltering. He is a 30-year member of the Americus Kiwanis Club, a key member of the Eta Theta Chapter Sigma Chi Fraternity alumni association, and serves on the Americus Zoning Commission. Hicks also has worked extensively with organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, the Jaycees, the Boys and Girls Club of America, and the Americus Cancer Society, to name a few.
A vice president at SB&T Bank in Americus, Hicks has worked with SB&T for the last 22 years. Prior to graduating from Georgia Southwestern in 1973, Hicks served with the Army Security Agency from 1969 to 1972.
A native of Columbus, Hicks and his wife, Lana, reside in Americus and have one son and two grandsons.
