GSW Campus Community “Feeds the Future”

AMERICUS (Oct. 31, 2013)--The goal of institutions of higher education is to feed the mind; however, the body must also be fed. And college students, who often live on tight budgets, rely on their meal plans each semester. But, if a meal plan does not last the entire semester, some college students have difficulty paying for food. At Georgia Southwestern State University, the Office of Campus Life is tackling this issue with the new food pantry program, “Feed the Future”.

“The main goal for the food pantry is to provide meals for our students that may not necessarily be able to continue their studies at GSW, because they cannot afford to eat,” said Josh Curtin, the director of Campus Life. “This is at least one expense the GSW community can help contribute towards.”

The food pantry is stocked by donations of non-perishable food items or items with an extended shelf-life from the community. “The reception has been pretty good”, said Curtin, adding that over 250 canned goods had been donated already. “We have had Kappa Delta, Kappa Sigma, Zeta Tau Alpha and several individuals from different departments provide a lot of canned goods. I'm hoping we can start looking at some other items on the list.”

In order for students to receive goods from the pantry, they must be referred by a faculty, staff, or professional and present a valid student ID. Currently, there is a limit of two visits per student per fall and spring semester. “Feed the Future” will start taking referrals for this semester soon.

“I've heard of a few students from different departments, so I hope they can muster up the courage to receive support from their GSW family,” added Curtin. “Hopefully, we can help at least two or three this semester.”

The “Feed the Future” food pantry is located in the Student Success Center, room 3461. For more information, Contact Josh Curtin at josh.curtin@gsw.edu or (229) 931-2377.
