Nearly 390 graduate, ready for next phase

AMERICUS (Dec. 11, 2012)--Georgia Southwestern State University graduated nearly 390 students Saturday, Dec. 8 during its Fall 2012 Commencement. William "Dink" NeSmith, chair-elect of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, delivered the keynote address.

He encouraged the graduates to follow their dreams in spite of the tough times. "Tough times don't last," he said. "Tough people do."

NeSmith also shared the story of his mother, Marjorie NeSmith, who was in attendance. Mrs. NeSmith was a student at GSW in 1941, but she left school to join the war effort after Pearl Harbor was bombed.

During commencement, Jason Berggren, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science and 2011 Excellence and Commitment to Teaching Award recipient will served as the Macebearer and delivered the reflection. Greg M. Hawver, Ed.D., professor and department chair of Health and Human performance, will be the Grand Marshal.
