AMERICUS (Nov. 30, 2012) —Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) will hold its Fall 2012 Commencement ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 in Convocation Hall of the GSW Student Success Center. William “Dink” H. NeSmith, Jr., chair-elect of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, will be the commencement speaker.
With 387 students expected to graduate, ample space for guests is limited. Family and friends of graduates are encouraged to arrive early.
NeSmith is co-owner and president of Athens-based Community Newspapers, Inc., which publishes several dozen newspapers in Georgia, Florida and the Carolinas. A native of Jesup, he is a 1970 graduate of the University of Georgia (UGA) and chairman of the Richard B. Russell Foundation that supports the University of Georgia Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies. He is past-president of UGA’s Alumni Association. He is an emeritus member of the UGA Athletic Association’s board of directors and the UGA Foundation’s Board of Trustees. He is also past president of the Georgia Press Association and former chairman of Leadership Georgia.
During commencement, Jason Berggren, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science and 2011 Excellence and Commitment to Teaching Award recipient will serve as the Macebearer and deliver the reflection. Greg M. Hawver, Ed.D., professor and department chair of Health and Human performance, will be the Grand Marshal.
A graduation breakfast is planned for 8:15 a.m. in the Marshall Student Center Dining Hall.
