Our curriculum is structured to provide both a strong foundational knowledge in IT and specialized training in key areas of the field. Students can choose from the following concentrations or a combination of the two, providing flexibility and specialization:
The IT concentration focuses on core IT competencies, including the design and management of information systems, data storage solutions, and server infrastructure. This option is ideal for those aiming for roles in IT support, systems administration, and database management.
The health informatics concentration is tailored for students interested in the healthcare sector and combines IT skills with healthcare knowledge, preparing graduates for roles in managing healthcare information systems, electronic health records, and healthcare data analysis.
The multimedia & mobile app development concentration is perfect for creative tech enthusiasts, focusing on the development of multimedia projects and mobile applications. Graduates will be equipped for careers as mobile app developers, multimedia designers, and software engineers specializing in mobile technologies.
The project management concentration is designed for future IT project managers, this concentration provides comprehensive training in project management tools, leadership strategies, and risk management, ensuring graduates are ready to lead IT projects to success.
A growing variety of internships are offered to IT students across campus and throughout the community providing for additional experience outside of the classroom and lab setting. Opportunities may include web programming, videography, digital signage creation, and information technology support with many positions providing both class credit and payment.
Many internships have led to full-time employment upon graduation.
Student interns also have opportunities to assist with the live production and event recording of bi-annual graduation ceremonies, live recording of sporting events throughout the year, and the live production of GSW's annual TEDxGeorgiaSouthwesternU event. These engaging experiences allow students to apply learned knowledge while gaining confidence in the field.
Beyond the Classroom activities provide collaborative events such as field trips, employer immersion, and undergraduate research which foster growth and maturity in our students.
Employer Immersion is a unique opportunity for GSW students to learn about an industry by visiting an organization's workplace. By engaging with professionals in a small group setting, students will be welcomed by staff, tour the company, and explore their interests by experiencing a typical workday in that field. While visiting, students have the chance to go behind the scenes of an organization or manufacturer, ask questions to professionals in the field, understand real world problems, and find out about potential job and internship opportunities in various disciplines and industries.
The annual Undergraduate Research Symposium provides students with research opportunities with an an expert in the field while engaging in best practices of research standards.
Learning database construction and web design has helped me tremendously at my job and for my capstone project. I have created a webpage for my job in order for employees to upload and download any work-related documents. My capstone project was heavily database and website involved, so learning both ahead of time has made the process much smoother.
