How Do I Know If I Should Seek Counseling?
If you or someone you know has been:
- Dealing with alcohol and drug abuse
- Having difficulty concentrating
- Feeling helpless or hopeless
- Performing poorly at work and/or in class
- Suffering from low self-esteem
- Experiencing relationship conflict with relatives, friends, or significant others
- Experiencing a crisis or stressful event (death in family, divorce, or breakup of a relationship)
- Experiencing suicidal thoughts
SOME COMMON SIGNS INDICATING THAT A STUDENT IS IN NEED OF HELP:
- Lack of energy, listlessness, continually sleeping in class
- Behavior that regularly interferes with effective management of your class
- Frequent absence with little or no work completed
- Marked changes in personal hygiene
- Dramatic drop in academic performance
- Always asking for special consideration/make-up excuses
- Overly suicidal thoughts, sometimes expressed in writing
- Inability to make decision despite your repeated attempts and encouragement
- Dramatic weight loss or weight gain
- Always making appointments to see you during office hours
- High level of aggression, even violent behavior
