History with Teacher Certification/ Pre Law

Hey y'all… my name is Lauren Miller and I am from Marietta, GA. I attended Alan C. Pope High School where I was part of the schools color-guard and winter-guard program. At Southwestern, I plan on going through rush and hopefully joining a sorority in the fall. I also hope to join other organizations too. I chose Southwestern because of its campus feel and hospitality. When I first toured the campus my sophomore year of high school, I fell in love. It was truly the best fit for. I am planning to major in either History or Political Science so I can go to Law School or maybe teach high school history. I can't wait to embark on this wonderful journey through college!

Back in a Routine
January 19, 2012

Having a day off after one week of school was so nice! I was able to go home and help my sister babysit 15 kids!!! It was crazy but so much fun!

While I was at home, I worked on homework for the first week of classes. I love my schedule this semester. I don’t have any 8 AM classes which is nice because waking up early was not for me. (: I don’t think my classes will be bad this semester. My hardest class and the one I am most worried about geology because I am not very interested in rocks, although I’m sure it will be fine in the end. My professors are wonderful just like they were last semester.

I love being back in the routine as I am a person who likes to have a plan and know what they are going to be doing all day. I was ready for classes to start back and I am so very happy that they have. Some may call me a nerd for saying that, but I have always loved school and I always will.

Spring Semester is Here!
January 5, 2012

Happy 2012 everybody!!!! I can’t believe winter break is already over. It went by so fast… just like everything else has this year so far. My break was nice and relaxing; I worked some and got to see lots of friends I have been missing. I loved seeing old friends and swapping stories of what is going on in college. Hearing about every ones experience is so interesting because no one’s is the same.

Christmas was wonderful at my house. Santa brought everything my siblings and I wanted and more. It was a very Merry Christmas at my house, although I wish it would have snowed like it did last year.

I can’t believe I am already back at school, it was hard to leave my family because we are so close, but I know I will see them again soon. I am so excited about being back at school and starting a new semester. I can’t wait to spend more time with my sorority sisters and friends. This semester is one I am greatly looking forward too!

Study Time is Over
December 13, 2011

Wow… I cannot believe that my first semester of college is already over! It really flew by faster than I thought it would. I am so glad to be on break for a month, though.

My finals all went really well; I studied for hours on end, but it was worth it because I knew all the information I needed to know. While I enjoyed all my classes, I am glad they have come to an end as I am ready to move on to new subjects.

I am so excited for break! I plan on hanging out with friends who I normally don’t get to see, shopping with my mom, and working some. While I am going to miss all of my friends at school, a break is more than needed. I hope all of y’all have a wonderful winter break!!!

Time to Study
November 29, 2011

I can’t believe this semester is almost over; it has really flown by. This last week of classes is going to be consumed with studying for my finals. Luckily the weather isn’t too great so it’s easy for me to justify spending so much time inside.

Thanksgiving break was wonderful! It was so nice to be home with my family for more than just a weekend. I was able to see some friends from high school and spend lots of time with my family. I helped my parents cook thanksgiving dinner, like usual, and it was delicious. My entire family came over to my house for dinner and it was so good to see them and catch up with each other. Thanksgiving night my immediate family went shopping for some black Friday deals. We got some really great stuff and I’m super excited to get it for the holidays.

Time to get back to studying for finals, but I hope y’all had a terrific Thanksgiving break!!!

Preview Day was a Blast!
November 20, 2011

These last few days have been c-R-a-Z-y!!!!

On Wednesday, KD and ZTA had a painting party together. It was so much fun to paint some canvases with my sisters and get to know some of the ZTA’s a little better!

On Friday we had Campus Pride to get ready for preview day on Saturday. Once again Kappa Delta and Zeta worked together to clean up the campus so it would be as beautiful as it could be for all of you potential students to see. Our student life coordinator, Josh Curtin, ordered us pizza for lunch and we took a group picture together at the end of the day.

Saturday started bright and early for me and my roommate. Hope is a Zephyr Tour Guide and I was working the KD table at the organization fair, plus we showed our room for the tours. Maybe some of y’all got to see it; if you did I really hope you liked it!!! The organization fair was lots of fun I loved talking to all the girls that stopped by our table and the other KDs working with me. I am so thankful to be able to call such a great group of girls my sisters!

This upcoming week we just have classes Monday and Tuesday and then its Thanksgiving break. I am so excited to go home and see all of my family. Talking on the phone and texting can’t compare to actually being with them! Sunday is my brother’s birthday so I’m glad I’ll be home and be able to celebrate it with him!

Fun Time Before Tests
November 6, 2011

Last weekend I went home for some much needed family time! I was able to catch up with some of my close friends who are still in high school and go shopping with my mom and sister. Since I went home on Thursday afternoon, I was able to go help my sister on Friday at her school. My sister is a fourth grade teacher. All of Friday morning I helped with her do centers on the moon. It was so much fun and I loved seeing my sister in her element. Before I knew it, the weekend was up and it was time for me to drive back down to Americus. I loved being home and I cannot wait to go back home for Thanksgiving Break!

This weekend my sorority, Kappa Delta, held our Annual International Girls Day Festival. It was so much fun to bond with my sisters and play with little girls for the community! International Girls Day has to do with one of our philanthropies in which we instill in girls that they have the power to do anything and no one can stand in their way. Since I was a floater for the festival, I was able to walk around and help with all the different activities. I ended up staying at the bouncy obstacle course because it was fun and some of the girls needed help with it. Once we had the okay, all of us older girls were able to play on it as well which was so much fun!!! I cannot wait for International Girls Day next year.

This upcoming week I have a World Civilization II test and a Sociology test. These are my last tests of the semester in these classes before my finals. I really hope to do well on both of them so I have been studying really hard. Fingers crossed all goes well on both of them!!!

Sorority Life
November 1, 2011

BIG/Little Reveal went really well. I love my KD big so much and I am so happy to have her! Getting to see my family was great I had forgotten how much I missed everything at home. By the end of the weekend though I was more than ready to come back down here and be on my own again.

Last weekend was Emerald Ball for my sorority, Hope and I decided not to go for various reasons. We decided to stay in and watch a movie that night instead. It was great roommate bonding, even though we are super close anyway. Last night there was band party downtown. This event was so much fun!!! I got ready with my big and grand big beforehand, and then we met up with some other friends before riding the trolley downtown. This weekend my pledge class will be initiated in to the sorority and we are all so very excited about it. I cannot wait to no longer be a new member of the sorority.

Getting the Routine Down...
October 7, 2011

Now that I’ve been down here for seven weeks, I have a nice routine with classes and my social life. Having so much freedom is definitely something to get used to, but I love it. It took me a little while to get the hang of balancing my time, studying, as well as hanging out with friends. Although some of my assignments have been difficult, none have been unachievable and my teachers are still more than happy to help me. Midterms are drawing near (next week) but I’m not worried about my grades because I have kept up with all graded assignments in my classes.

I am so very excited for this weekend. Tonight I get to find out who my BIG sister is in Kappa Delta. I can’t wait to see who it is!!! Tomorrow I am going home for the first time since I have moved down here! I can’t wait to see my family and my dogs; while I love it down here, I miss my family a lot too.

An Incredible Week
September 8, 2011

Last week was RUSH/Recruitment for the sororities. We have two on campus: Kappa Delta and Zeta Tau Alpha. I absolutely loved last week it was so much fun!

On Tuesday evening close to 70 girls showed up to hear all the rules and regulations for the week. After the business side of things was taken care of we got to go see the Kappa Delta and Zeta Tau Alpha floors in the upper classman residence hall. On Wednesday, everyone went to both parties that each sorority held. Then on Thursday morning we had to go pick up invitations to the parties for that evening. I was so nervous I could hardly eat anything. Luckily I was invited back to both parties which were very fun because it was skit night. Then the same thing happened on Friday; once again I was invited to both parties and I accepted both invitations. Friday night was a lot more serious as it was Preference Night; the sisters really showed all of us how much they loved each other and the sorority they were a part of. Finally, on Saturday morning we found out if we got a bid from a sorority. I was a nervous wreck waiting on my name to be called so I could see my bid. As I ran out of the doors and towards the Kappa Deltas, I felt like it was exactly where I belonged. The sisters are the sweetest things ever, and I love each and everyone of them.

After we finished taking loads of pictures we all went to one of the older sister’s lake house. We sat around her pool and got to know one another better. Although I burned while sitting by the pool that day it was one of the best days of my college career so far.

I joined a sorority because I knew that if I had a bad day, there would always be a group of girls who still loved and supported me. I knew they would encourage me to do well academically and socially. Whether it is a philanthropic event or just hanging out… I look forward to nothing more than just spending time with my new sisters.

Freedom...
August 21 , 2011

Hey y’all! I can’t believe I’m already done with my first week of classes. It all went so well! Everyone down here is so sweet and it is super easy to feel at home! I absolutely love it; I can already tell this year is going to turn out better than I ever thought it would.

Since classes started on a Tuesday… my roommate, Hope, and I went to look for our classes on Monday. On the first day of class I was surprisingly not nervous at all. All of my professors were super enthusiastic about teaching my classes. They were all so very nice and helpful.

The Campus Activities Board had things planned for the freshman all week to keep us busy and to help us meet new people. One day we got Beta fish and were able to make a habitat for them to live in. Another day we were able to build teddy bears. Both of these activities were super fun!

I honestly couldn’t ask for more in my first week on campus. I’m beginning to make new friends and experience what college is all about… freedom.
