Chemistry – Pre-Pharmacy

My name is Hillaree Kaii McClelland. Friends and family call me Kaii, while strangers call me Hillaree. I am from Douglas, Georgia. I graduated from Coffee High School where I made some of the best memories of my life. During high school, I was a Mat Girl for the Wrestling Team, keeping score and cheering for the wrestlers.  I made a lot of great friends, and it was a wonderful experience. I was in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, a pitcher for the Lady Trojans Softball Team and an active member of Covenant Church 20/20 Youth.

My dream profession is a Pharmacist; therefore I plan to get involved in the Chemistry Club. I think it is a great way to experience chemistry and make friends.  I plan to join a sorority to continue serving my new community. I am also considering becoming a member of the Baptist Collegiate Ministries. I love church.  Since I will be away from my church, I would like to serve in Baptist College Ministries.  Also, I am interested in becoming a member of O’Team.

I chose to attend Southwestern because of the southern hospitality and home-town feeling. After learning about Southwestern’s Pre-Pharmacy program and the college life, I was sold.

Shaking about Finals
April 7, 2013

The semester is in full swing, and I am just trying to stay on top of all my work. Since it is nearing finals and the end of the semester, I am trying to begin all my final projects for my classes. In my computer class, we have a capstone project that is due and it will count as our final. In my Psychology class, we have a term paper due next weekend and that is an essay explaining how Psychology deals with my major. I am going to the Writing Center this week to let them help me with my citations. School is definitely never ending. I feel like I can never take a break on the weekend, like I could do in high school.

There are also many activities going on here at GSW. The admissions office made a Harlem Shake video about a month ago that turned out really cool. Kappa Sigma Fraternity also had Highway 55 come and perform at their house Thursday night and that was a lot of fun. This weekend SUAVE is having a sneaker ball for anyone that wants to come. I think it will be a lot of fun, and I am looking forward to showing off my tennis shoes. That’s all for now, until next time be blessed!

Read Hotel Reviews Carefully
March 25, 2013

Is it really already Monday? Oh my goodness.. It feels like I just left for the beach! I can’t believe it is already time for school, again. It is amazing how time flies! Spring break was definitely one I will not forget. Friday morning before spring break started on Monday, I left for the beach with 5 other friends. We went to St. Augustine for the weekend. We headed to the beach on Friday as soon as we arrived, but it was very cold so we ended up going back to our room.

When we got inside our room we noticed we didn’t have a refrigerator or a microwave that we had paid extra to have. We also noticed we didn’t have a fire alarm, a phone, or a lock on the door. (We were so scared) So we went on the internet and looked up the reviews on our hotel and it was definitely one we should not have stayed at. We learned our lesson to always read the reviews before going to a new place. Even though our hotel wasn’t very nice, we didn’t let that stop us from having fun. We still went to the beach on Saturday and had a ton of fun. We went out to eat Saturday night for Jessi’s birthday and had a blast. We came back Sunday night. After the weekend at the beach, I came home and spent the rest of the week with my family. It was a great week being around them and catching up. I can’t wait to go back home for Easter. Until next time, be blessed!

Ready for Spring Break
March 11, 2013

Spring semester is now into full swing with lots of activities and lots of studying going on. I have so much stuff to do this week, the week before spring break. I guess the professors want everything finished before spring break. I have a Geology lecture and lab test Wednesday. Thursday I have a speech, and all my computer apps assignments are due.  Then I have to do all my Psychology stuff before Friday, because I am leaving for the beach. It is going to be a full week of nothing but school and work. For spring break, I am going to St. Augustine with a bunch of girls from GSW & from my hometown. We are only going for 4 days and then I will spend the rest of my spring break at home. I am very excited to go home, because I haven’t been home in 3 weeks.

To upcoming freshman in college, I want to remind you to keep making good grades. I understand it is coming to the end of the semester, and graduation is right around the corner, but that doesn’t mean you can start slacking. This is the time when you need to be doing your best. It’s all about your final grades, and that is what colleges looks at. They like those high GPA’s. Also, make sure to be applying to your preferred college. It will be here before you know it! I hope GSW is a school that you are really considering! It has been a great experience for me. I am glad I chose to come to GSW my freshman year.

Baking a Great Homecoming
February 18, 2013

Well homecoming has come and gone so fast, already. SUAVE has been preparing for homecoming for a couple of weeks now. We painted a sheet to hang outside on campus to support our Canes basketball team. We also painted a banner that went in the Storm Dome on game day. It was a lot of fun getting ready and decorating for homecoming. During homecoming week, we had lots of activities. I went to the SUAVE bake off. We had a big variety of baked goods cooked for it and everyone came and tasted each goody. The top three bakers won a prize. I also went to the game on Saturday. It was disappointing seeing both the teams lose on homecoming weekend, but we still made it a memorable homecoming. During half time our homecoming king and queen were announced. This was a very fun and exciting time for all the fans at the game.  Homecoming in college is definitely different than high school, but it was so much fun with all the exciting activities for everyone.

Classes are going well. We have midterms coming up in a week, so I will begin studying for those this week. Since I am only taking four classes, and some of my classes don’t have midterms, I don’t think it will be too tough for me this semester. I also have started a job with the recreation department in Americus. I am a gymnastics coach and I love it. Since I am going to school to become an Early Childhood teacher, it really helps me to interact with the kids and learn how to deal with different people. Well that is all for now.  Until next time, be blessed!

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and I have enjoyed doing nothing at all. Last Tuesday was my birthday, and I went home with one of my friends, Jessi, to celebrate my birthday this past weekend. We went out and had so much fun. I even met some new people. Sunday we studied a little bit and also washed some clothes. Then today we were on our way back to Americus. I have spent the afternoon getting everything back in place. In the process, I have noticed my room really needs to be cleaned, and I need to do it this week. Times like this are when you realize you miss home. Cleaning = L;This Thursday I have friends coming to Southwestern for the weekend. I am excited about showing off the campus and allowing them to experience dorm life.

School is back in full force and I can definitely tell. I am taking a lighter load this semester, because I am trying to get a job. I am taking two online classes and two classes on campus. I am taking Geology with a lab, which I surprisingly am enjoying. It’s not too bad. I am also taking public speaking in class, which is my least favorite class. I am not a fan of talking in front of people. I am taking psychology and computer applications online. I have never taken an online class, so it is taking some time getting use to, but I really like them so far. I am hoping for all A’s this semester, since I am not taking many classes. Well that’s all for now, until next time be blessed!

Back to Americus
January 06, 2013

Hi guys! It’s my first night back in Americus, Sunday night of course, and I have had a very busy day! I started packing up my room yesterday.              After church today, I finished with my room and packed the car. My daddy kept teasing me I wouldn’t fit it all in the car, but to my surprise and his, we got it all in there! On the way to Americus, I stopped and saw my new baby cousin, and then came straight here. When I got here I found out I had a new roommate, which was exciting. Then I unpacked all my stuff and as of right now, I still have piles of stuff lying around in my room. I’ll clean it up tomorrow after class!

My Christmas break was fun and exciting. I did so much stuff during the break. Most of my time was spent working at Dairy Queen… making some money for my next semester. I also had a great Christmas with my family. I was happy to be around them and catch up. I also went to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta to Passion 2013, a youth conference with my church. It was life changing. I met some great friends while I was there.

I’m looking forward to starting my next semester at Southwestern. I am looking for a job for the week days and I am praying I will get one. I am also very happy about getting back into SUAVE and seeing all my friends again! My friend Jessi and I are going to start working out some also. I’m not as nervous this semester about my classes either. I have two online classes and two classes in the classroom, and I think that will be better for me. Well that is all for now, until next time… be blessed!

Time to be Lazy
December 10, 2012

I can’t believe my first semester of college is over! I made it through all the tough long days of studying and everything else that comes with being a college student. I would say my first semester of college was okay. I definitely have learned a lot of things and will change those things next semester, but for the most part it was a success.

Finals in college are nothing like those in high school. They are much more stressful, and have a lot to do with your grade. In my History class, my final counted 35% of my final grade, which is a lot. I studied the week before finals and the whole week of finals and still didn’t do as well as I would’ve liked on them, but it’ll be okay. Next semester I will now know what I have to do to get the grades that I would like.

For Christmas break, I am planning to be lazy and read books that do not require tests. I also plan to work to earn some money to help out next semester. I am so excited about being home with my family over the holidays. I am going on a youth conference with my church the first week in January and I am really excited about that. After the youth conference I will be going back to Americus for a full semester of classes. Until then, be blessed!

Good to be Home
November 26, 2012

It’s the Monday after Thanksgiving break and I have to say the break sure wasn’t long enough! I went home Tuesday, right after class was over, and stayed home the whole week. I enjoyed seeing all of my family and being surrounded by them the whole week. I can’t wait to get through these last two weeks of school, and then I’ll be back home for a month. There’s nothing like going home!

As finals are approaching very fast, I am going to start studying for those soon. I have four finals next week, and two are on the same day. I’m going to study as hard as I can, because finals are a very big percentage of your grade. I am hoping to make really good on all of my finals. That’s all for now, until next time, be blessed!!

Hauntingly Busy
November 2, 2012

November?? Is it really already November? I cannot believe how fast my freshman year in college is going! I have been doing so much and at Southwestern. I am a member of the Zephyr Recruitment team and recently gave a tour to a group of high school students from Alpharetta, GA. It was my first time, so of course I was very nervous. I also participated in Southwestern’s Preview Day on October 20th. This was so fun for me and a great experience. I loved telling others about my time at Southwestern.

I have also joined another organization called SUAVE. It is my favorite organization. We are always busy raising money to help the community. We walked in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk at Phoebe Sumter Hospital, which was meaningful to me because my Granny, Peggy, is a breast cancer survivor. I was very happy to be walking in her honor, as well as other survivors and in memory of those who lost their battles. SUAVE also hosted a fashion show, which was very fun to see all the beautiful ladies dressed up. We gave all the money we raised to the Susan G. Komen Fund For the Cure.

Halloween was so exciting this year! The residents of my residence hall floor decorated our doors for Halloween. We had a contest to see which door was decorated the best. I also gave candy to Trick or Treaters that came through the residence halls. My friend, Jessi, and I dressed up as cats and had a lot of fun.  After handing out candy, we went to a haunted house on campus. It was in one of the old residence halls and was hosted by the Residence Hall Association. I went with some friends and we had a great time, but it was scary.

I am looking forward to Thanksgiving break, which is just around the corner. This is all I have for now. Until next time, be blessed!

Digging in a Mine
October 8, 2012

Well, it is a week after midterm exams and I am still anxiously waiting on one of my grades. I took a History midterm two weeks ago, and I am hoping and praying I made a good grade on it. On this particular exam, you had to fill in the blank, write two one paragraph summaries, and write an essay. I have only taken a few tests like this, so I was very nervous. I also took a math test the next week after my History midterm. After lots of tutoring sessions and studying for math, I managed to make a 96 on my test. I was so excited that I had to text my mama right when I found out and let her know. On top of my History midterm and math test, I also had to take a chemistry quiz and history quiz all around the same time. Needless to say, it was a very stressful two weeks for me. I am happy to say God helped me get through those two weeks.

After a stressful last two weeks, I was happy to be heading to Douglas for fall break. I left Americus Friday, after I got back from a field trip with Chemistry Club. We went to C-E Minerals in Andersonville, Georgia, and learned a lot of neat things about minerals. We even went down in a mine, which was my favorite part. After the field trip, I went to Douglas and spent a great weekend at home. On Saturday, I went to Waycross and watched my brothers play baseball. Sunday, I went to church with my family and spent a relaxing afternoon at home. Monday, I slept in and then it was back to Americus for a short week at school. I love GSW and everything it has, but I also love to go home and see my family, too. That’s all for now so until my next blog, be blessed!!

My Car wouldn't Start!
September 27, 2012

Well, it is almost the end of September… the second month of the beginning of my college experience.  I am realizing more things about the new college life every day. I am still trying to do better with time management. I am trying to study and get all of my homework out of the way before I go to extracurricular activities.

I have recently joined an organization called SUAVE. It is a group of girls coming together to better the community and help the community out in any way possible. We participated in the Magnolia Manor Walk two weekends ago. It was a fun time for me to hang out with all the girls and get to know them better. This week we had a pillow talk. Mrs. Alma Keita, the founder of SUAVE, came and talked to us about major things that happen at colleges while we decorated a pillow case. I am also on the Zephyr Recruitment Team. Zephyrs help out with all the campus Preview Days and do private tours for future GSW students. I want to be able to tell others about all the great things GSW has to offer and to be able to tell them my favorite things about Southwestern.

Before I let you go, I want to tell you one more experience I had this week. On Monday night, after a stressful day, it was too late to go to the café to eat, so I asked my roommate if she wanted to go get something for supper. We get to my car, I push the button to start it, and it won’t crank. I had to call campus safety to send a police officer to jump me off. It was so embarrassing, but I want to say I am so glad I am at a school where if something like that happens, I can call campus safety and they will help me out. I was very thankful they came and helped me so quickly. That’s all I have for now, come back in a few weeks for more! Until then, be blessed!!

Work it Out
September 4, 2012

Well, it’s Labor Day weekend and I am at St. Augustine Beach with my family. I left Americus Thursday afternoon and went back to my hometown of Douglas. We left for the beach Friday morning and we are having a blast! It feels so nice to get away with my family and have fun, but the bad thing is even on this holiday while I’m at the beach, I’m still doing homework over the weekend.

College has really been a challenge for me. I’m still trying to figure out how to study and manage my time with all the things I have going on throughout the day. I have three academics this semester and they are really keeping me busy in the books. I feel like all I do is study, study, study, and if I’m not studying then I’m sitting in the classroom listening to my professor. College is definitely a lot harder than high school, and I’m still having to adjust to having so much school work to do in so little time.

Last week I went through Sorority Recruitment, it was a great experience. I met a lot of wonderful people, but I decided it was best for me to wait until next year to join a sorority with everything I have going on right now. I wanted to wait until I got the feel of college before joining.

I started going to the fitness classes at Southwestern this past week. They are so much fun and you get a really good workout. I attended the bicycling and palates classes, and I can really feel it working.  I’m excited about getting back to Americus and doing more fitness classes and walking around campus with my workout partner, Kristin. That’s all I have for this week, come back in a few weeks to catch my next one. Until then, be blessed!

Glowing Togas
August 18, 2012

So, it’s the Saturday after being in college a week and I am so happy to say I survived my first week of college! College is different than high school in so many ways.  I am still trying to adjust to the college life of living in a residence hall and studying so much.

On Move-in day, I got to Southwestern really early and started cleaning my room. Later, my daddy came with a trailer full of all my stuff. We finally got the trailer unloaded and things set up in my room. Then came the hard part of telling everyone goodbye. A lot of tears were shed, but also a lot of smiles, too.

Sunday, the entire freshman class had to go to the Storm Dome for orientation. At orientation, we played lots of games and went to three different sessions where they told us different things about GSW. It was very fun, but also very long.

Tuesday night, the Chi Phi Fraternity had a toga party. My roommate and I went. It was very fun listening to the loud music, watching everyone dance, and meeting more new people.

My first weekend at GSW and I have already had a visitor. I was so happy when I found out my best friend from home was coming to see me. She came late Friday night. We went to Wal-Mart with one of my friends to get things to decorate his room with. After the Wal-Mart trip, we went back to his room and helped make his room a little cozier. It turned out really nice!

Tonight we plan to attend the glow party at the Kappa Sigma Fraternity House. We are very excited about going! I’m hoping it will be a lot of fun. Well that’s all I have for right now, come back later for more College Life! Until then, have a blessed day!

Excited, Nervous, & Thrilled…
August 10, 2012

Tonight I find myself packing my bags, emptying my bedroom, and attempting to spend a few last minutes with my friend. It’s the night before move-in day and I am feeling every emotion there is to feel! I am really excited I’m moving to Southwestern… nervous about the way everything is going to work… and thrilled to finally get my own space.  I just hope I have enough room for all my stuff! I’m also happy about spending time with my roommate. I had an opportunity to spend time with her before the semester started.  This meeting made the transition much easier.  I really enjoy hanging out her and we have a lot in common.

I’m thrilled about my first year at Southwestern. I am looking forward to sorority recruitment and the possibly of joining group. I have already met many girls that are really nice and have helped me with unanswered questions about college life. I am also thinking about joining the Orientation Team. It seems really fun and I would meet several new friends. Since I want to be a pharmacist and I have lots of chemistry classes ahead of me, I am also thinking about joining the Chemistry Club. There are so many opportunities and clubs to join at Southwestern.

I am so glad I chose Southwestern and look forward to the future. Until next time, be blessed.
