Exercise Science & Wellness
Hello! I'm Ally Johnson, an 18 year old small town girl from Hinesville, Georgia. At Pinewood Christian Academy, I participated in the One Act Plays, and oral interpretation in the Literary Competition. I was also a contestant for 2 years in the Miss PCA pageant.
Being from a small private school, I knew I wanted to go to a college with an intimate setting. After looking at several options online, I decided to attend a preview day at GSW. After speaking to the professors and students and looking at the beautiful campus; I felt right at home. I applied to different colleges, and toured different campuses, yet nothing felt more like home to me than Southwestern. By senior year, I knew I was a future hurricane!
During my first year I'm planning to join a sorority. My brother is in the greek system, and loves every second of it. Drama was my life in high school, so I may do theater at GSW. But nothing is 100% yet.
My major right now is exercise science. Someday I would like to be an Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist. My goal is to work with the mentally challenged or in geriatrics. A lifetime goal is to make a difference in someone else's life. With the right education from GSW, I believe I can make this goal a reality.
Arrrr... It's Halloween!
November 2, 2012
Happy Halloween! GSW really knows how to celebrate this spooky holiday! To start my holiday, I was walking to class and saw the most precious kids on campus trick or treating. They were the 4-year-old students in the School of Education’s 4-K program. So cute! The next night I got to go out and chill with my friends. I dressed up as a pirate and had a blast seeing everyone else in their Halloween costumes!
Fall is Here...
October 9, 2012
Happy Fall everyone! I hope midterms for everyone went well. As for me, I only had one midterm and it was an essay. So not hard at all!
Fall is definitely one of my favorite times of the year and Southwestern’s campus is beautiful in the spring and fall. As for fall break… I got to spend time with my family. Since I'm at a college far from home, it was nice to have a long weekend to spend time at home with the people I love.
The Debate is on...
September 28, 2012
A few days ago my composition teacher came into class and told us we would be doing something I never would have expected... we were having a debate. Most people think in a college class you only go in listen to the teacher talk, but not at Southwestern! We were given a topic and divided into two groups. Everyone in the class had a lot to say and we all had a lot of fun debating. That experience reminded me just how great a school like GSW is. At large schools, we would have never been able to debate like we did… trying to would have been chaos. This untraditional and fun way to learn was much more effective than just being lectured.
September 4, 2012
Hello again! As the weeks have been progressing I’m starting to face the true trouble with college… time management. Through all the papers, tests, and homework, I have found my days becoming nonstop busy! Not that that’s a bad thing, there is just little room for down time.
I’ve gotten to know my professors better which help when I have questions or don’t understand something covered in class. Usually at night I enjoy going to dinner with a close friend I met in my learning community so we can talk about upcoming events or class work.
I participated in sorority rush week, but in the end decided not to become part of a sorority. I had a lot of fun during the week and made new friends out of my experience. I absolutely loved dressing up every night!
Recently, I went to one of my first meetings for the Pope Fellowship at the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving. I’m still very honored and excited to be a part of such a great organization and look forward to what’s to come!
Ready for Recruitment
August 21, 2012
I can’t believe just how wonderful my first week was! At first, I thought that moving all my stuff into my room would take all day, but thanks to the friendly GSW students, it was done in no time! So far, I love all my classes. Psychology is probably my favorite class because it’s so interesting and the professor is enthusiastic about her job, making learning much more fun. The learning community I’m in has some really cool people. My friend Taylor and I met in class and just clicked right away. I’m so glad I met her and the other students in the exercise science community.
I am SO excited for sorority recruitment week to start! After studying and getting my academic affairs out of the way every night, I have been picking out my outfits for the week. I have had a few chances to meet other Greeks and everyone is so nice, which makes me even more excited to get to know more people.
As far as I can tell, this is going to be a great year! As different as it is being away from my hometown, I love it here at GSW!
I am a Hurricane!
August 10, 2012
On May 20th 2012, I graduated from high school and counted the days on my phone’s calendar until move in day. What seemed like forever was really just a little wait. Tonight, August 10th, I looked at that same calendar and wondered what happened to my summer days; and a quick panic hit my stomach… I’m moving into my residence hall tomorrow!
I’m very excited to be in my new home; yet very sad to leave my parents behind. I am very close to my family; and as hard as it may be, I’m starting a new chapter in my life. It’s hard to watch my daddy cry in anticipation of leaving his baby girl behind. My mom has been calm so far, but I feel a tear or two from her is in the near future. My parents have been my steady rock for eighteen years, so leaving is difficult.
As for me, I am nervous to start life on my own; yet I’m very, very excited! The car is packed almost to the roof with all of my stuff. Bedding, boxes, clothing, and many rolls of toilet paper have filled the car till I can’t fit anything else. A lot of what I am bringing with me is the color pink. I LOVE pink! My refrigerator, bedside table, bedding, sheets, and lounge chair are all pink. If you need a visual, think of Pepto Bismol thrown about the room. I also have a lime green rug and lime storage boxes to even out the pink a little. Obviously I’m a girly girl, and my dorm room will heavily reflect that.
I went to a small private high school, so for college I knew I wanted a smaller and more intimate university. I picked Southwestern because the first time I visited campus I felt an instant connection. I really could “see myself at Southwestern.” Now that move in day is tomorrow, I am not only seeing it, I’m living it. I could not have asked for a better college to attend and I have no doubts about Southwestern at all! Though I am not sure what my future holds, I know in my heart Southwestern will help me achieve my big dreams. My new life is here, and I’m proud to say that I am a new Georgia Southwestern Hurricane.
