New Online Graduate Certificate Programs

The GSW Mathematics Department has two new online graduate certificate programs which may interest you.   The first is a certificate for K-8 teachers who may currently be teaching Mathematics courses "out of field," and would like to get appropriate training in Mathematics.  The second is a certificate for teachers with a BS in Mathematics, or a BS in Mathematics with Certification, who would like to acquire 18 graduate credits in Mathematics, to prepare them to teach in the State's two year colleges, or two year technical schools.  Both programs were approved by the Board of Regents in September of 2009.  The  two document files give program specifics.  If you need additional information, please contact John  Stroyls via phone: (229) 931-2362, or email:jjs@gsw.edu.

ANDERSON ASSUMING STATE PRESIDENT POSITION

Ervin D. Anderson, Senior Lecturer in the Georgia Southwestern State University School of Computing and Mathematics, will serve as the 2010 – 2011 President of the Georgia Association of Developmental Educators. GADE is the Georgia chapter of the National Association of Educators. GADE represents over fifty universities, colleges, and technical colleges in the state of Georgia. After serving two years as GADE Vice President, Anderson was elected to serve by his peers and the executive board. The mission of GADE is to improve the theory and practice of developmental education at all levels of the education spectrum, the professional capabilities of developmental educators, and the design of programs to prepare developmental educators.

In April, Anderson attended a required Leadership Congress for state presidents and the NADE National Conference in Columbus, Ohio. Anderson states that “the Developmental education model will be changing soon and look forward to being part of this transformation”.

GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY AWARDED GRANT

The University System of Georgia (USG) African American Male Initiative (AAMI) has awarded new matching fund grants to eleven programs addressing the educational needs of Black males.
Mr. Ervin D. Anderson, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Georgia Southwestern State University, wrote and received an AAMI grant. He is serving as the Executive Director of the GSW African American Male Institute. The institute started in the Fall of 2008 with after school class offerings in Computer Science, Mathematics, Academic Skills, Social Responsibility and Self Awareness for junior and senior African American males from Americus Sumter High School. The institute also provides participants workshops on standardize test taking, college registration, and financial aid for higher education. The      AAMI hopes to provide participants the opportunity to become educated and productive citizens in our community and society.
