Student Scholarship

There are two scholarships available to English majors: the Agnes E. Agerton Endowed Scholarship and the Iris Stewart Argo Scholarship. The scholarships are awarded in the spring on Honors Day. 

AGNES E. AGERTON BIOGRAPHY

The Agnes E. Agerton Scholarship was established by Dr. Millard Agerton in 1996 in memory of his sister, who taught English at Georgia Southwestern State University for many years.

Miss Agerton, who died April 17, 1994, was the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Millard D. Agerton. She was born in Vidette, Georgia, in Burke County, graduating from Wrens, Georgia High School in 1933.

After leaving GSW, Miss Agerton attended Mercer University and the University of Georgia where she was awarded her bachelor's and master's degrees in Literature. She was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi, honorary scholastic society. She taught in public schools, including neighboring Preston in Webster Country, from 1944-66 before her teaching career at Georgia Southwestern from 1966-76. She taught English and Literature.

IRIS S. ARGO BIOGRAPHY

The Iris S. Argo Scholarship was established by the Argo family in 1995 in memory of Dr. Iris Argo, who is remembered for her scholarship, her dedication to teaching, and her many years of service to Georgia Southwestern State University.

Dr. Argo was born in 1914, in Leslie, the daughter of the late Henry Alonza and Nona Harp Stewart. She was educated in the Sumter County School System and received her undergraduate degrees from GSW and Georgia State College for Women. She completed a master's degree in English at Mercer University and the doctoral degree in English at the University of Georgia. She was the first woman to be awarded the doctoral degree in English at UGA.

Her retirement in 1983 from GSW marked the close of a long and distinguished career as a teacher and administrator. During the last 27 years of her career, she played a leading role in developing outstanding programs in English and the humanities at GSW. She also assumed leadership for developing the facilities and equipment to support the program.

ENGLISH SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT LIST AND CRITERIA

Please note the following criteria for both the Argo and Agerton scholarship awards:

  1. Minimum of 20 hours in English beyond the English 1102 level;
  2. Minimum of 3.0 in English courses above English 1102;
  3. Minimum of 2.5 overall GPA; 3.0 preferred
  4. Student must be an undergraduate
  5. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated participation in college or related academic activities particularly those sponsored by the Chunnel Club and Sirocco;
  6. Final selection of recipient determined by the English faculty.
